Where romantic flowers go in Jackson splits cleanly between apartment-dense neighborhoods and front-door suburbs, and the two need different instructions. Fondren (39216) is the city's densest romance destination — the North State Street and Duling Avenue blocks, condos and apartment buildings above the restaurants, a neighborhood people move to precisely because they can walk to dinner. Almost every delivery there needs a gate code, a building entry code or a phone number, and a driver without one is making a second trip. Belhaven and Belhaven Heights (39202) are the opposite: historic houses with deep porches and steps, where an unattended handoff genuinely works, tucked among Millsaps College, Belhaven University and the Eudora Welty House on Pinehurst Street. Midtown in the same ZIP and the downtown lofts in 39201 — the restored King Edward and Standard Life buildings among them — behave like Fondren and need a code. Northeast Jackson (39211) with Eastover, Woodland Hills and the Old Canton Road blocks is front-door territory and Mostlymartha's shortest run. North Jackson at 39206 and 39213 and the west and south Jackson ZIPs — 39203, 39204, 39209, 39212, 39217 — run the same way. Out past the line, Ridgeland 39157, Madison 39110, Flowood 39232, Pearl 39208, Brandon 39042 and 39047, Clinton 39056, Byram 39272 and Richland 39218 all take routine runs, with the gated Madison and Brandon subdivisions needing a code at the entrance.
The evening itself usually happens in one of three pockets, and it is worth matching the delivery to it rather than fighting it. Fondren is where most Jackson dates start — Walker's Drive-In on North State, Saltine, Babalu, Sal & Mookie's, and Duling Hall when there is a show on. Belhaven and downtown carry the slower version: the Fairview Inn's 1908 Provisions dining room, Elvie's a few streets away, the Iron Horse Grill on West Pearl Street, Hal & Mal's on South Commerce, and Thalia Mara Hall on East Pascagoula — the hall that hosts the USA International Ballet Competition, which is about as romantic a ticket as this city sells. The Mississippi Museum of Art and its Art Garden on South Lamar sit a few blocks from both. Highland Village and Ridgeland are the third pocket: Char, CAET and Bravo! at I-55 and Northside Drive, Amerigo and Shapley's up the road, Table 100 out in Flowood, and the Renaissance at Colony Park blocks on Highland Colony Parkway. Outdoors, Jackson has better options than it gets credit for — LeFleur's Bluff State Park inside the city, Mynelle Gardens on the west side, the Natchez Trace Parkway trail running through Ridgeland and Madison, and the Ross Barnett Reservoir shoreline northeast of town, which is where most of the metro goes to watch a sunset. Flowers cannot be staged at a park or a trailhead, so the practical version is the house before dinner or the hotel front desk after check-in.
