Everyday routes in Jackson behave differently street by street, and for an unannounced delivery those differences decide everything. Belhaven and Belhaven Heights (39202) are the friendliest addresses on the board for a surprise: historic houses, deep porches, real front steps, shade — the blocks around Millsaps College, Belhaven University and the Eudora Welty House on Pinehurst Street, where an arrangement can wait in shade for an hour without harm. Midtown, in the same ZIP, is studio-and-warehouse conversions and behaves like an apartment building. Fondren (39216) is the metro's densest everyday destination and its trickiest: condos and apartments above the North State and Duling Avenue strip, almost all of them needing a gate code, a building code or a phone number. Northeast Jackson (39211) — Eastover, Woodland Hills, the Old Canton Road and Meadowbrook blocks — is front-door territory and Mostlymartha's home ground. North Jackson (39206 and 39213) runs Broadmoor and the Northside Drive and Bailey Avenue grid around Thewishingwell's own bench, with the Tougaloo edge at 39174. Downtown (39201) is loft and office territory, including the restored King Edward and Standard Life buildings. West and south Jackson (39203, 39204, 39209, 39212 and the Jackson State campus at 39217) cover Washington Addition, the Capitol Street corridor out past the zoo, Terry Road and Ellis Avenue. Beyond the city, Ridgeland 39157, Madison 39110, Flowood 39232, Pearl 39208, Brandon 39042 and 39047, Clinton 39056, Byram 39272 and Richland 39218 are routine, with the gated Madison and Brandon subdivisions needing a code at the entrance.
What Jackson actually sends flowers for, absent an occasion, follows the city's own calendar and institutions. Teacher thank-yous run heavy in the last two weeks of May and again in the first week of the school year, across Jackson Public Schools, Madison County, Rankin County and Clinton Public Schools, plus faculty at Jackson State, Millsaps, Belhaven University, Tougaloo and Mississippi College in Clinton — school and department offices accept deliveries all day and hold them at the front desk, which works well because a teacher is not reachable mid-period anyway. Hospital thank-yous are the second pattern and one of the most genuinely appreciated: an arrangement to a nurse station at UMMC on North State Street, Baptist Medical Center a mile down the same road, St. Dominic on Lakeland Drive or the VA on East Woodrow Wilson, addressed to a unit rather than a person, thanks a whole shift at once. Then the city's own rhythm supplies the rest. Mal's St. Paddy's Parade takes over downtown in March and fills houses with out-of-town guests. Fondren After 5 brings the neighborhood out on a weekday evening. The Mississippi State Fair runs at the fairgrounds in October, the Junior League's Mistletoe Marketplace fills the Trade Mart in November, and the Mississippi Farmers Market on High Street runs its Saturday trade most of the year. All of those produce the same two orders: hostess flowers for whoever is putting people up, and thank-you flowers afterward for whoever did the work.
