A thoughtful delivery, step by step

Choosing funeral flowers for a service

By GoFloristGo · Flower delivery planning · Updated

Choose funeral flowers around the family’s wishes and the actual service setting. Ask the funeral director about display space and receiving arrangements. A standing spray, wreath or vase arrangement serves a different purpose; coordinate casket flowers with the person arranging the funeral.

Let the family’s wishes guide the choice

Read the current service notice or ask the funeral director whether flowers are welcome. If the family requests donations instead, follow that request. There is no need to substitute flowers because they feel more familiar to send.

Preferences for flowers, colors, symbols and donations are personal. Ask when you are uncertain about a religious shape or a culturally specific arrangement. Do not infer a family’s wishes from a surname or a funeral home’s name.

Match the arrangement to the place it will be displayed

A standing spray is designed to be displayed upright, often on an easel. Check the finished dimensions, whether the stand is included and where the venue can place it. A wreath or shaped tribute also needs an agreed display position; its product name does not tell you whether a stand is supplied.

A vase or basket arrangement may suit a table, but verify the container and footprint. Ask what will happen to the flowers after the service if the family wants to take them home. Large service displays can be difficult to transport.

  • Standing spray: ask about easel, height and setup space.
  • Wreath or shaped tribute: confirm symbolism, support and display position.
  • Vase or basket: ask about table space, container and transport.
  • Casket arrangement: coordinate with the family’s chosen organizer before ordering.

Confirm the actual arrangement, including substitutions

Compare the selected size, recipe and container with the product photo. If a particular color or flower matters to the family, ask what happens if it is unavailable. A substitute should not silently change the intended meaning, format or budget.

A sympathy category is a useful starting point, but it can contain both service tributes and gifts intended for a home. Choose for the confirmed destination rather than relying on that category label alone.

Keep the card sincere

A brief message can be enough: ‘With love and remembrance,’ or ‘Thinking of your family and remembering Alex with warmth.’ Sign with the names you want the family to see. For a group gift, agree on how the group should be identified.

Before sending, check the spelling of the name and the delivery deadline. The funeral home may need flowers well before the service begins. Choose the destination and establish that receiving time before treating a product as deliverable.

Common questions

Should everyone send a casket spray?

Coordinate casket flowers with the person organizing the funeral. Do not order one independently without checking the family’s arrangements.

Is white always the right color?

No single color fits every family or service. Follow stated preferences or ask the funeral director rather than assuming a universal custom.

Does a standing spray include an easel?

Check the specific product and florist’s offer. A photo showing a stand does not establish what is included in your selected option.
