The destinations split three ways, and each behaves differently. Homes are the majority and the easiest: the Olde Towne streets off Jackson Street, Wheatley, Sunnybrook and Steed Road are the shortest run of all from the Highway 51 bench, and the newer residential quarters off Lake Harbour Drive toward the Ross Barnett Reservoir, along Rice Road by the Mississippi Craft Center and off Old Agency Road are straightforward daytime drops. Apartments and townhomes are the hard ones, and Ridgeland has a dense band of them along Old Canton Road and Pear Orchard Road where a controlled gate, a locked breezeway or a leasing office that closes at five decides whether the delivery succeeds. Give the building and unit number, the gate code if there is one, and a mobile number for the recipient; many complexes will accept a delivery at the leasing office and hold it, which is better than a bouquet left in an August breezeway. Hotels handle the traveling half of romance: Embassy Suites by Hilton Ridgeland and Hyatt Place Jackson/Ridgeland sit in the Colony Park and County Line corridor, Hilton Jackson is across the county line on East County Line Road, and downtown Jackson adds The Westin Jackson, the Hilton Garden Inn in the restored King Edward building, the Old Capitol Inn and the Fairview Inn in Belhaven. Front desks hold by guest name and check-in date; if you want the arrangement placed in the room, call the desk after ordering and ask, because the hotel decides that, not the florist.
Two last pieces of local judgment. First, the workplace question. A bouquet on a desk at Butler Snow on Highland Colony Parkway, at C Spire, in a Renaissance or Township suite or behind a counter at Northpark is a public statement, and it is a wonderful one for an established relationship and a risky one early on. Ridgeland offices are multi-tenant and signed by street address rather than company name, so a desk drop needs the recipient's full name, the building address, the suite number and the employer to work at all — and if the relationship is new or private, the house is the better address. The same logic runs on campus: Holmes Community College's Ridgeland campus on West Ridgeland Avenue, Mississippi College in Clinton, Millsaps, Belhaven and Jackson State in Jackson all accept deliveries at a front desk or mailroom and hold them rather than walking them to a room, so include a mobile number and expect a pickup. Second, proposals. The local answer is water and the parkway: Old Trace Park on the Ross Barnett Reservoir, the Natchez Trace Parkway bridge crossing the water beyond it, and the multi-use trail that runs through Ridgeland are where this town takes its photographs. All three are outdoor, which argues for a firm-stemmed hand-tied over a delicate garden mix, and all three are ten minutes from the in-town bench. If the plan is outdoors between June and September, remember that a Mississippi afternoon above ninety-five degrees is as hard on cut flowers as it is on a suit — book a morning or evening window, carry the arrangement in air conditioning, and keep the stems in water until the last possible minute.
