Where romance actually lands in this valley is a short list of address types. Downtown and the Bon Ton historic district in 59715: the lofts and apartments above the Main Street storefronts, the Victorians along South Willson, Tracy and Bozeman Avenue, Cooper Park, and the Northeast neighborhood behind Story Mill. These are the easiest deliveries in town — walkable, clearly numbered, and a short run from either shop. The Montana State belt is the other dense cluster: the residence halls on the south side run card-access entries with staffed front desks, and the off-campus student apartments spread along College Street, Eighth and Eleventh Avenues and out toward Kagy and Stucky. A student address needs a full legal name, a unit number and a mobile number; the halls will not route a nickname and the apartment complexes will not buzz a stranger in. The west end in 59718 — Valley West, Baxter Meadows, the fill-in between Durston, Oak and Baxter — is new construction with long driveways and, in winter, the porch problem described below. Four Corners, Gallatin Gateway and Bridger Canyon are the rural tail.
Bozeman is a proposal town, and the geography of that is worth saying out loud because it changes what to order. People get engaged on the M trail and Drinking Horse in Bridger Canyon, at Hyalite Reservoir and up Hyalite Canyon, on Peets Hill above downtown in Burke Park, at the Gallatin Canyon pullouts, at Big Sky and Spanish Peaks, and in Paradise Valley beyond Livingston. Flowers cannot go to any of those places — no address, no van, no chance. What works is sending them to the place the couple comes back to: the rental, the hotel front desk, the house, the apartment. A bouquet waiting at the desk when two cold, thrilled people walk in from a canyon is a better moment than one carried up a trail and crushed in a pack. For the getaway addresses, the front-desk list is downtown's The Lark on West Main, the Kimpton Armory Hotel on West Mendenhall, Element Bozeman and the RSVP Hotel on North Seventh; the Gallatin Gateway Inn, the 1927 Milwaukee Road railroad hotel twelve miles southwest; Rainbow Ranch Lodge and the 320 Guest Ranch along the river in the canyon; and at Big Sky, Montage Big Sky, the Summit Hotel and Huntley Lodge at the resort, The Wilson Hotel in Town Center and Lone Mountain Ranch. Chico Hot Springs in Paradise Valley is the classic Montana romance destination and sits at the far edge of the radius — ask at checkout before you count on it.
