The hotel route is the second-most-used anniversary destination after the house, and Bozeman has more of it than it did a decade ago. Downtown: The Lark on West Main, the boutique property most out-of-town couples book; the Kimpton Armory Hotel on West Mendenhall, built into the old armory building a block off Main; Element Bozeman downtown; and the RSVP Hotel up on North Seventh. The Baxter Lane and North Seventh chain cluster near the interstate handles the volume side. South and west of town the character changes: the Gallatin Gateway Inn, built in 1927 by the Milwaukee Road as a railroad gateway hotel to Yellowstone, is the valley's most atmospheric anniversary address and sits about twelve miles out toward the canyon. Down US-191 in the Gallatin Canyon, Rainbow Ranch Lodge and the 320 Guest Ranch sit along the river. Big Sky, 45 miles south, holds Montage Big Sky at Spanish Peaks, the Summit Hotel and Huntley Lodge at Big Sky Resort, The Wilson Hotel in Town Center and Lone Mountain Ranch in the meadow. Every one of these takes a front-desk handoff. What the studio needs is the reservation name exactly as it was booked, the check-in date, and a phone number — a bouquet sent to a room number that has not been assigned yet goes nowhere.
There is a structural reason Bozeman anniversaries cluster in summer, and it is the same reason the town is full of people in their thirties who moved here from somewhere else: this valley is a wedding destination. Couples marry at the Gallatin Gateway Inn, in the Emerson Center's ballroom in the old Emerson School building on South Grand, at the Story Mansion on South Willson, at Riverside Country Club north of town on Springhill, at Big Sky and Spanish Peaks, and on private ranch land up Bridger Canyon and down the Gallatin. The Montana wedding season runs roughly June through September because that is when the passes and the mountain roads cooperate, which means anniversary volume runs June through September too, a full decade or two later, and a large share of it is ordered from out of state by people who were guests at the original. If you are one of them: the couple almost certainly still knows the venue, and a card that names it does more work than an extra ten dollars of stems. For the residential side, the anniversary grid is the north side's Bon Ton Victorians along South Willson, Tracy and Bozeman Avenue, Cooper Park, the Northeast neighborhood behind Story Mill, the Sourdough and Figgins blocks on the south side, and the newer builds out past Nineteenth through Valley West and Baxter Meadows.
