The single thing that decides whether a Worcester birthday delivery lands is the doorbell. Worcester built its housing stock in three-family wood-frame triple-deckers, and whole neighborhoods — Main South below Clark, Grafton Hill above Water Street, Vernon Hill, Union Hill, Green Island, Bell Hill, Quinsigamond Village — are street after street of them, each with one street number, one shared front porch and three separate households stacked above it. A bouquet addressed to 41 Something Street with no floor and no apartment number gets left on a porch shared by three families who do not know whose birthday it is. Give the studio the floor (first, second or third) or the unit letter, and a mobile number for the recipient. The second thing is grade. Worcester is genuinely the City of Seven Hills and the hills are not decorative: Vernon Hill, Union Hill, Bell Hill, Green Hill, Grafton Hill, Pakachoag and Mount St. James all pitch steeply enough that a street can run twelve feet of elevation in a single house lot, and porch stairs on the uphill side ice over from December into March. Drivers know this; they just need to know which door.
Worcester's birthday volume splits about evenly between homes and workplaces, and the workplace half is concentrated in a few buildings. The Hanover Insurance Group occupies 440 Lincoln Street, the largest single office address on the north side and directly on the Holmes Shusas Florist side of town. Fallon Health is downtown at 10 Chestnut Street, a block off Main. The Mercantile Center towers at 100 and 120 Front Street hold most of the rest of downtown's professional floors, with City Hall at 455 Main Street on the Common and the Worcester County Courthouse at 225 Main Street a few minutes north of them. Out on the Plantation Street medical-and-research spine sit Reliant Medical Group at 630 Plantation Street and the AbbVie Bioresearch Center at 100 Research Drive, both on the same run as the UMass Chan Medical School campus at 55 Lake Avenue North. Polar Beverages has been at 1001 Southbridge Street since the nineteenth century, and Saint-Gobain Abrasives works the old Norton Company site at 1 New Bond Street. Further out but inside the radius: IPG Photonics in Oxford, eClinicalWorks and Cumberland Farms in Westborough, and the Marlborough office parks at the eastern edge. Desk drops need a floor, a department and a name at reception — office towers here sign for deliveries at a lobby desk, not at a cubicle.
Then there are the campuses, and Worcester has an unusual number of them for a city this size. College of the Holy Cross on Mount St. James at 1 College Street in 01610, Worcester Polytechnic Institute at 100 Institute Road in 01609, Clark University at 950 Main Street in Main South, Assumption University at 500 Salisbury Street, Worcester State University at 486 Chandler Street, Quinsigamond Community College at 670 West Boylston Street, MCPHS University downtown at 19 Foster Street and the UMass Chan Medical School on Lake Avenue North all take deliveries, and from late August through early May a meaningful share of Worcester birthday orders are parents sending to a nineteen-year-old in a residence hall. Every one of those schools routes packages and flowers through a central mail or package center rather than to a dorm room door, and that matters for timing: the center has posted hours, it closes for the weekend, and a Friday-afternoon arrival can sit until Monday. Send a campus birthday Tuesday through Thursday, before noon, with the student's full legal name as the registrar has it and their mobile number on the order. Worcester Academy on Providence Street, Bancroft School on Shore Drive and Notre Dame Academy on Salisbury Street take front-office deliveries on the same logic.
