Romantic delivery in Wilmington is mostly residential, and the housing stock decides how hard it is. The rowhouse belt — Forty Acres, the Highlands and Trolley Square in 19806, Little Italy around Saint Anthony of Padua and Union Park Gardens in 19805, Quaker Hill and the Riverfront apartments in 19801 — is walkable, dense and charming, and also narrow, one-way and short on parking. A driver working those blocks with a phone number succeeds; a driver working them with a doorbell and a hope does not. The Brandywine Hundred suburbs north of the city — Fairfax, Alapocas and Talleyville in 19803, Bellefonte and Penny Hill in 19809, Arden and the Pennsylvania edge in 19810 — are the easiest romantic deliveries in the county: real driveways, covered porches, and enough setback that a surprise stays a surprise. 19807, the Kennett Pike corridor through Greenville and Centreville, is the opposite problem: long private drives, house numbers on posts, entrances around the side. 19808 is Pike Creek and Marshallton; 19804 is Newport, Stanton and Richardson Park. Wilmington is about seventeen square miles, which means none of this is far — the difficulty is never distance, it is knowing which door.
If the delivery is part of a proposal, tell us in the order notes, because the logistics change completely. Wilmington has an unusually good supply of places to ask. Rockford Park in 19806, the hilltop with Rockford Tower above the Brandywine, is a few minutes from Boyd's Flowers and is the classic in-city answer. Brandywine Park below it has the Josephine Gardens cherry trees, which bloom for about a week and a half in early April and are worth building a date around. The Christina Riverwalk and the Tubman-Garrett Riverfront Park run along the water past the Kalmar Nyckel's berth. Alapocas Run and Bellevue State Park give you woods and a Brandywine Hundred lawn respectively. Out in the Valley, Longwood Gardens' fountain garden in Kennett Square and Winterthur's grounds on Kennett Pike are the two most-used destination proposals in the region, and Barber's Florist is 9.9 miles from the centroid in the same square mile as Longwood. For any of these, a hand-carried bouquet timed to the hour is a different order than a porch drop — give us a window, a mobile number and a person to hand it to, and order at least a day ahead. Public parks cannot receive a delivery; the handoff has to be to a human.
Workday and hotel romance is the other half. Wilmington's downtown is small and legible — the Rodney Square ring holds the DuPont Building at 1007 Market, Wilmington Trust at 1100 North Market, One Rodney Square and Hercules Plaza at 1313 North Market, all of it a short run from Boyd's — and a Friday afternoon bouquet on a desk there is a well-worn Wilmington move. Every one of those buildings runs a staffed lobby, so send a floor and a full name, and consider handing off to a named colleague if the surprise matters more than the timing. For an overnight, the Hotel du Pont at Eleventh and Market is the city's landmark room, The Quoin on North Market is the boutique alternative, the Westin Wilmington sits on Shipyard Drive by the Riverwalk, and the DoubleTree on King Street and Sheraton Suites on Delaware Avenue cover the rest downtown. Address those to the front desk with the reservation surname and check-in date. For date-night venues, the Grand Opera House on North Market — Delaware's official opera house and home of the Delaware Symphony — the Playhouse on Rodney Square, The Queen down the block and the Delaware Art Museum on Kentmere Parkway are the rooms Wilmington couples actually book, and a restaurant table drop needs the restaurant's own agreement before it needs ours.
