Where romantic deliveries actually land here is more varied than the hotel-and-restaurant story most cities tell, because Waterbury does not have much hotel stock and most couples live here rather than visit. The three patterns that dominate: home, campus and workplace. Home means the six city ZIPs — 06702 downtown, 06704 through Bucks Hill and Waterville, 06705 east through Hopeville and the East End, 06706 south through Brooklyn and Platts Mills, 06708 west over Town Plot, Bunker Hill and Overlook, 06710 up the middle — and in practice it means a lot of two- and three-family porches with unlabeled bells, plus the downtown apartments in the converted commercial blocks near the Green and Bank Street, where there is usually a locked lobby and no doorman. Put the apartment letter in the address and a phone number in the notes; on Valentine's Day a driver with sixty stops will not wait long at a silent buzzer. Campus means UConn Waterbury at 99 East Main Street downtown, Naugatuck Valley Community College at 750 Chase Parkway, and Post University on Country Club Road — mostly commuter students, so a campus delivery is a gamble unless you know a class schedule, and a home address is the safer choice. Workplace means the Grand Street and Bank Street offices, the courthouse block, the Brass Mill Center, and the bigger employers out in the ring towns. A workplace delivery on Valentine's Day is a public statement and should be treated as one: ask first if you are not sure, and if you go ahead, a morning window matters because the audience goes home at five.
For a date rather than a delivery, the valley gives you a short, real list. Downtown, the Palace Theater at 100 East Main has been running shows in a restored 1922 Poli house for years, and dinner within walking distance means Diorio on Bank Street with its mahogany bar and pressed-tin ceiling, Carmen Anthony Steakhouse, or Drescher's. Out of the valley, Carole Peck's Good News Cafe in Woodbury is the destination dinner, eight and a half miles west on the antiques strip, the same Main Street South where Petalperfectionconfections works. The overlook people actually use is Holy Land USA on the hill above the Mixmaster, where the illuminated cross visible from I-84 sits above a view of the whole city — a genuinely Waterbury place to end an evening, and free. Fulton Park in the Hillside section is the daylight version. Further out, Lake Quassapaug in Middlebury, Black Rock up past Watertown, Sleeping Giant in Hamden near Divine Orchid Florist, and Lake Compounce in Bristol — the oldest continuously operating amusement park in North America — fill a summer afternoon. One practical note for long-distance couples: the Metro-North Waterbury Branch runs from the old Union Station down the valley to Bridgeport on a single track, which is how a partner without a car arrives and why a station-timed delivery is sometimes what you actually want. Restaurant table pieces are welcome, but call the restaurant first and give us the reservation name and time; the arrangement arrives in the afternoon and waits behind the host stand, never at seven during service.
