Flowers for Warrenton, NC

Stand on the courthouse square in Warrenton and you are looking at one of North Carolina's most intact antebellum towns — block after block of Federal and Victorian houses, brick storefronts, and the Warren County courthouse presiding over Main Street, all of it a half-hour south of the Virginia line. That preserved core is where the flower work concentrates, and the character of it leans toward the solemn and the ceremonial: arrangements for the churches clustered around Halifax and Franklin Streets, standing sprays for the funeral homes that serve a rural county with long family memory, and porch deliveries to the old houses along Bragg, Ridgeway, and the two-lane roads bending out toward Norlina and Macon. Push past the town limits and the county thins fast toward the state line and the Kerr Lake and Lake Gaston shorelines, which means a Warrenton florist puts serious miles on between stops. Sympathy pieces and church occasions carry a heavier share of the calendar than they would in a busy suburb, and the shops here keep the service schedules in their heads.
