Flowers for Roanoke Rapids, NC

The rapids came first, then the canal, then the mills. Roanoke Rapids grew where the Roanoke River drops fast enough to turn machinery, and for most of the twentieth century cotton mills ran the town in the far northeast corner of the state, a stone's throw from the Virginia line. Those mills are largely memory now, but the grid they laid out — Roanoke Avenue, Jackson Street, the compact downtown, the canal district that still traces the old waterway — is exactly where a good share of the deliveries land, alongside the newer subdivisions spreading toward Weldon and the lake. I-95 runs close enough that it functions like the town's real main street, and that shapes the orders: a lot of them come from people passing through, or from family they can only visit a few times a year, wanting flowers set out before they arrive.
