Desk drops in this county are concentrated in a handful of buildings, and knowing which building matters more than knowing the company. The Santa Cruz County Government Center at 701 Ocean Street holds county departments and the Superior Court, and a bouquet left at the front counter without a department name can sit for hours — name the department and the floor. City Hall at 809 Center Street works the same way through its Center Street courtyard. UC Santa Cruz and Dominican Hospital are two of the largest employers in the county, so a good share of birthday desk orders are for a staff member rather than a student or a patient, and for Dominican the useful note is the unit the person actually works on. On the Westside, Joby Aviation on Delaware Avenue and Santa Cruz Bicycles sit inside the light-industrial belt between Mission Street and the ocean, with the Swift Street Courtyard businesses nearby. Downtown, Cruzio on Cedar Street houses a coworking floor where the front desk will accept a delivery, and the Tannery Arts Center on River Street — six blocks from the studio — is full of working artists whose studio numbers are not obvious from the street.
Over the hill and down the coast the office map stretches. Scotts Valley, fifteen minutes up Highway 17, carries Threshold Enterprises on Janis Way, Universal Audio, Bay Photo and the 1440 Multiversity campus on Bethany Drive. South in Watsonville there is Driscoll's, Granite Construction on West Beach Street, S. Martinelli & Co. — pressing apples in that town since 1868 — and Graniterock. All of those are one-lobby or one-reception buildings, so the pattern is the same: recipient name, department or team, and a mobile number. The seasonal exception is the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, which employs a small city's worth of people in summer, almost none of whom have a desk. For a Boardwalk or wharf worker's birthday, send to the house and time it after shift.
College birthdays are their own category here, because UC Santa Cruz is not a campus so much as ten small settlements in a redwood forest. The colleges — Cowell, Stevenson, Crown, Merrill, Porter, Kresge, Oakes, Rachel Carson, College Nine and John R. Lewis — climb from the Bay Street entrance up Coolidge Drive and Empire Grade, and a driver who is only told 'UCSC' has been given an address that spans two miles of hill. Give the college name. Nobody delivers to a dorm room; the working pattern is a handoff at the college's own mail or front desk with the student's phone number so they come down for it. Family Student Housing is a separate stop again. The quarter calendar matters too: a late-June or July birthday usually belongs at a home address, not on the hill. Cabrillo College on Soquel Drive in Aptos is a commuter campus, so a Cabrillo student's birthday flowers nearly always go to the house instead.
