Ask anyone who has lived in this county for twenty years where couples go for an anniversary and you will hear one name before any other: Shadowbrook, on Wharf Road in Capitola, where you ride a red funicular cable car down a fern-covered bank to a dining room beside Soquel Creek. It has been absorbing the county's anniversaries for generations, and it shapes how flowers get sent here. A table delivery at Shadowbrook works, but it wants a compact low design rather than a tall vase, because the arrangement rides the cable car or comes down the garden path, and because the creekside tables are not large. Give us the restaurant, the reservation name and the seating time, allow a day's notice, and aim for an early-evening booking rather than the 8:30 rush.
The rest of the dinner map is walkable or close to it. Downtown, Oswald on Soquel Avenue, Laili on Cooper Street, Soif on Front Street, Gabriella Cafe on Cedar Street and Alderwood on Walnut Avenue take the majority of the city's anniversary reservations, and all of them are within a few minutes of the studio on River Street. At the harbor, the Crow's Nest on East Cliff Drive puts a couple over the water with the sea lions audible below. In Seabright, La Posta is a small room where a large arrangement would be in the way. Out mid-county, Michael's on Main in Soquel, Zelda's and Paradise Beach Grille on the Capitola Esplanade, and Bittersweet Bistro and Mentone in Aptos carry the Aptos-and-Soquel share. A practical note that applies to every one of them: on a summer Saturday, Highway 1 at the 41st Avenue exit and the Capitola Village approach both stall, so a Capitola table drop in July is a morning job.
Santa Cruz is a town of small inns rather than a town of big hotels, and that changes the delivery pattern. The Dream Inn on West Cliff Drive is the county's only true beachfront hotel, looking straight down at Cowell's and the wharf, and it is the room couples book for a milestone. Hotel Paradox sits on Ocean Street a few minutes from downtown; the Chaminade occupies a ridge off Paul Sweet Road with a view across the bay that is the actual reason people book it. On the cliff itself, the West Cliff Inn and the Sea & Sand Inn are small properties within sight of the lighthouse, and the Babbling Brook Inn on Laurel Street is a creekside bed and breakfast a short walk from Pacific Avenue. In Capitola, the pink-and-blue stucco Capitola Venetian Hotel on Wharf Road and the Inn at Depot Hill on Monterey Avenue are the village standbys. Further out: Seascape Beach Resort and the Seacliff Inn in Aptos, the Hilton on La Madrona Drive and the 1440 Multiversity campus on Bethany Drive in Scotts Valley, and the Inn at Pasatiempo beside the golf course off Highway 17. At the larger properties, expect a front-desk handoff with the guest name and check-in date; at the small inns, ask and the desk will often set it in the room before arrival. Either way, on a surprise, list your own cell number on the order, not your partner's.
A large share of Santa Cruz anniversaries are being celebrated within a few miles of where the wedding happened, which is a thing worth knowing when you choose the arrangement. Couples married at the Hollins House above the Pasatiempo golf course, in the Cocoanut Grove ballroom at the Beach Boardwalk, at Holy Cross on Mission Hill beside the mission, in a redwood grove at Roaring Camp in Felton, at Kennolyn in the Soquel hills, on the lawn at Seascape or the Chaminade ridge, or barefoot at Its Beach, Seabright or Natural Bridges. Anniversary orders frequently go back to those same places — a return dinner, a return night, a photograph at the same railing on West Cliff. If the flowers are going to be carried into a photograph or out onto sand, say so: a hand-tied bundle that can be held survives that day, and a tall glass vase does not.
