Start with the address, because on a birthday the address decides everything. Kathryn's Flower And Gifts Hop sits at 3261 Fort Ave, in 24501, the only shop on this grid and measured 7.5 miles out from the city centroid. Fort Avenue is not a side street: it runs southwest out of downtown, past Bank of the James Stadium at 3180 Fort Avenue where the Hillcats play, on toward Fort Hill, and it is the road the southern half of Lynchburg hangs off. So the practical geography of a birthday here is simple to describe and easy to get wrong. Fort Hill, Timberlake, the Wards Road retail strip and the Liberty campus are all short runs from that block — a bouquet ordered at one o'clock is genuinely a bouquet on a desk by three. Rivermont, Boonsboro, Peakland and Linkhorne sit on the other side of the hills, and Madison Heights is across the James entirely. None of that is far in miles. All of it is slower than it looks on a map, because this city climbs, doubles back and drops toward the river in a way that punishes anyone routing by straight line.
The second thing to understand is that one shop is one shop. We widened the search radius to 60 miles for Lynchburg precisely because the market is thin, and that honesty cuts both ways: it means we can reach Bedford and Amherst and Rustburg, and it also means there is no second designer to absorb a rush. On an ordinary Wednesday this never matters. On the Saturday of a graduation weekend, on the first weekend of a Liberty semester, or in the week either side of Mother's Day, it matters a great deal. If the birthday is more than two days out, book it now and put the date on the order rather than ringing at noon on the day and hoping. Nothing about that is a defect in the shop — it is arithmetic. A single bench can build a great many arrangements in a morning, but it cannot build them all at four o'clock in the afternoon, and a driver who is on Rivermont Avenue cannot also be in Timberlake.
Desk drops are the workhorse of a birthday page, and Lynchburg's are unusual for a city this size because so much of the white-collar work here is engineering and nuclear. BWX Technologies is headquartered at 800 Main Street downtown, Framatome runs its United States operation from Old Forest Road, Genworth keeps a large Lynchburg workforce, Bank of the James is a hometown bank with its offices in the same downtown blocks, Delta Star builds transformers here, and Centra — the region's hospital system — is one of the largest employers in the city on its own administrative payroll. Those are badge-controlled lobbies, not open floors. Nobody walks a vase to an engineer's desk unannounced. What gets a birthday bouquet through is the building name, the floor, the department and a mobile number, and what kills it is a Friday-afternoon delivery to a reception desk that locks at five and reopens on Monday. If the birthday falls on a Friday, send it Friday morning or send it to the house. One case particular to this city is worth naming: Centra is among the largest employers in Lynchburg, so a fair share of the birthday desk drops we take are for staff rather than patients. Say that on the order. A bouquet addressed to a hospital reads as a get-well to every person who handles it on the way in.
Then there are the houses, which in Lynchburg means the hills. Daniel's Hill, Diamond Hill, Garland Hill and College Hill are tight nineteenth-century streets with almost no driveway and a gradient that makes double-parking a considered act; a driver there needs a house number that is actually visible from the road, and a phone number is worth more than any delivery instruction you can type. Rivermont Avenue runs its long line of Victorian porches out past Randolph College at 2500 Rivermont Avenue and keeps going toward Boonsboro; Peakland, Windsor Hills and Linkhorne are the mid-century streets in between; Wyndhurst off Old Forest Road is newer and easy; Forest across the Bedford County line in 24551 and Timberlake south in 24502 are both suburban and quick; Madison Heights in 24572 is across the Carter Glass Bridge in Amherst County, five minutes and one river away. In July, a west-facing porch on any of them is an oven by four o'clock, so say where the shade is, or name the neighbour.
