Most places on Long Island belong to a shore. Islandia does not. The village sits roughly in the middle of the Island's width, which means the thirteen shops that serve 11749 fan out in both directions and all of them are, in any practical sense, local: Royalrose Florist Brentwood 4.7 miles west, Islip Flowers 5.9 miles south, Westsayville Florist 6.4 miles south-east on the Great South Bay side, Kingspark Florist 6.7 miles north toward the Sound, then Seasonalscape's Florist, Beckman's Florist and Laura's Floral at 8.3 miles in East Northport, Sweetpea Florist 9.7, Mayer's Flower Cottage 10.1, The Flower Basketnorthport 10.9, Florist Ofbabylonny 11.2 and Bunny's Floral 12.2 in Melville. Enchanted Flowers at 1250 Old Nichols Rd. is the one with an Islandia address, at zero. For a just-because order — the kind with no date attached — that spread is the whole advantage: you are picking a shop on its merits rather than on the only one that can reach.
The roads that make it work are numbered, not named after anybody. Veterans Memorial Highway, Route 454, is the spine west past the Suffolk County offices and east toward Ronkonkoma. Route 111 runs from Islip up through Hauppauge to Smithtown, which is how the north-south trips actually happen. Route 112 carries the Patchogue and Medford side. Carleton Avenue drops into Central Islip. And the Expressway service roads, Express Drive North and South, are the quiet trick of the village — at midday a van can cross from one side of Islandia to the other on them faster than any app will predict. What is not available is the pretty way: parkways here do not take commercial vehicles, so every route a florist drives is a traffic-light route, and a delivery ordered in the morning is worth more than a delivery ordered cleverly.
The sends worth making in this ZIP are ordinary and specific. The neighbour who runs a snowblower down your path in February without being asked and will not take money for it. The friend three streets over in Central Islip whose month has been one hospital car park after another. The teacher, at the end of a marking period rather than at the end of the year when every other parent has had the same idea. Someone starting at the Suffolk County Community College Michael J. Grant Campus in Brentwood, or finishing there. The person who does the organising in your family and has never once been the one receiving something. And the housewarming that nobody thinks to mark — this is a market where houses change hands between generations rather than between strangers, and a delivery to a family who has just taken over the house they grew up in lands differently from one to a new address.
