The second thing shaping a birthday here is that Haymarket is a commuting town and the commute is long. People leave early for Fairfax, Tysons, Arlington, the Pentagon and downtown Washington, out of the commuter lots at the Route 15 interchange and off the VRE Manassas line at Broad Run in Bristow, and they are not back on Heathcote Boulevard until well after the florist has closed his van doors. So a birthday bouquet arriving at a house at one in the afternoon frequently arrives at nobody. That is worth planning for rather than discovering. If the recipient is a working adult who lives in 20169, you have three sane options and one bad one: put a mobile number on the order so the driver can call; tell the shop it may leave the arrangement in a shaded, covered spot and say which one — a side porch, behind the storm door, under the overhang, not the front step in July; aim the delivery at the person's workplace if the workplace is inside the radius; or send it to a house where somebody is home, which in this market very often means a retired parent in Regency or a neighbour who agreed in advance. The bad option is hoping.
About workplaces, and where the honesty has to come in. These five shops work an 18-mile radius from 20169, and that radius reaches a genuine amount of employment: the Virginia Gateway offices and retail at Route 29 and Linton Hall Road in Gainesville; Innovation Park and the George Mason University Science and Technology Campus in Manassas; the industrial spine on Godwin Drive, where Micron runs its fab and Lockheed Martin keeps a Manassas plant; Manassas Regional Airport and the businesses along its fence; Old Town Manassas, where Flowers With Passionmanassas sits at 9010 Center St, a few doors from most of what a birthday order there would be aimed at; and the office parks around Westfields in Chantilly, which are closest to Chantilly Flowers at 4300 Chantilly Shopping Center Dr and Rhonda's Flowers VA at 13967 Metrotech Drive. What the radius does not reach is the place a great many Haymarket residents actually work. Arlington, Crystal City, Tysons, Reston and downtown DC are thirty to forty miles down I-66, past the point where a same-day run from these benches makes sense. If the desk is inside the Beltway, order flowers where the desk is, not where the house is.
One more case comes up constantly and is worth planning for: the Saturday party. A great many Haymarket birthdays are celebrated at home on a weekend — a Dominion Valley basement, a Piedmont back garden, a Greenhill Crossing deck — and the flowers are supposed to be standing on the table before the first car comes up the drive. That is a delivery with a genuine deadline attached to something that is not urgent, and the way to win it is to order for Friday instead of Saturday. Friday puts the arrangement in the house the night before, gives the shop a full day of margin, and spares the host one more door to answer while somebody is icing a cake. It also sidesteps the two things that make a Saturday run here unpredictable: youth sport, which fills Antioch and Catharpin and the school lots from mid-morning, and weekend traffic climbing Route 15 toward the mountains and the wineries. If the party itself is the surprise and the flowers genuinely cannot arrive a day early, buy the two-hour window and give the shop the hour the guests are due, not the hour you would prefer the van.
