The second thing that decides whether a romantic delivery lands is where the recipient will physically be at three in the afternoon, and in Harlingen the answer is often a workplace with a desk between the driver and the person. Along Business 77 — the Sunshine Strip — and out on Ed Carey Drive, Dixieland Road and the Expressway 83 frontage, storefronts and offices take deliveries at a counter and somebody has to walk it back. On the bigger sites — the Texas State Technical College campus on the north side, the Harlingen CISD schools, the industrial employers out by Valley International Airport — it is a security desk or a front office, which means a full name and a department, and it also means the surprise becomes semi-public. Some people love that; some would rather it arrived at the house. If your partner is private, send it home and tell us who else lives there so the shop knows whether a roommate, a mother-in-law or a teenager might open the door first. If your partner would love the whole office seeing it, say so and the studio will build something taller and louder, and aim for late morning so it sits on the desk all afternoon rather than arriving as everyone leaves.
Harlingen's romance geography is small, walkable in places, and specific. Downtown Jackson Street is where a date night actually happens in this city — the restored blocks, the murals, the restaurants within a few minutes of the Harrison Avenue bench, so a pre-dinner delivery downtown is one of the shortest runs on the grid. East, the way out of town is SH 100 — Los Fresnos, Port Isabel, the causeway — and that drive is what a Harlingen big night often looks like. Flowers can go to that end, though it is the longest and least forgiving run on this grid, and the safer play is to have them in hand before you leave. South, five miles down the road, is San Benito, a town that keeps the memory of Baldemar Huerta — the singer the rest of the world knew as Freddy Fender — and where Rosalba's sits on the town's main boulevard. The residential side is Treasure Hills, Stuart Place, the Palm Valley enclave and the small towns just past the loop: Rangerville, Primera, Combes, Rio Hondo, La Feria. All same-day; the further out, the earlier to order.
