The rest of the year, romance here is mostly a residential delivery, and the addresses split by age of neighborhood. The 1920s and 1930s streets — Fisher Park, Sunset Hills, Westerwood, Latham Park, Lindley Park off the UNCG side — are porch deliveries where the front door is visible from the street and a driver can leave a vase in shade. Irving Park and Hamilton Lakes are deeper lots with longer walks. Adams Farm in 27407, Lake Jeanette in 27455 and the newer streets out toward Summerfield and Oak Ridge are driveway-and-doorbell deliveries. Then there is the rental city, which is large in a town with two universities plus Greensboro College, Bennett and Guilford: the rental corridors off Wendover, Battleground Avenue, West Market and Spring Garden Street, and the loft conversions above the storefronts on South Elm Street in Old Greensborough, where the only way in is a street-level buzzer. Greensboro has essentially no doorman buildings. That single fact is why the note field and the recipient's phone number decide whether a surprise stays a surprise or becomes a text message asking where she is.
Campus romance is its own category and it has one hard rule. North Carolina A&T on East Market Street and UNC Greensboro on Spring Garden Street both run large residential campuses barely three miles apart, and their mail ZIPs — 27411 and 27412 — cannot receive a florist delivery. Use the hall's street address, add the hall name and a phone number for the student, and include the room if you happen to know it; the desk signs for the piece and texts them. Greensboro College on West Market Street sits two blocks from Plants Andanswers Florist, and Guilford College on New Garden Road is a short run from Botanicagreensboro. Expect delays during move-in week in August, during finals in December and April, and on home-game weekends when A&T's traffic reshapes the East Market corridor. A campus delivery on Valentine's Day is the single most congested drop in this city: hundreds of arrangements, a handful of desks, one afternoon. Order it days ahead and pick the morning window.
Greensboro's proposal geography is worth knowing if the flowers are part of a larger plan. The Tanger Family Bicentennial Garden and the Bog Garden sit on Hobbs Road a short drive apart and are where a great many local engagement photographs happen; the Greensboro Arboretum anchors the Lindley Park side; LeBauer Park downtown sits beside the Cultural Center; the trails at Guilford Courthouse National Military Park on Old Battleground Road are quiet on a weekday morning; and the greenway along Lake Brandt and the northern watershed lakes gives you water and no crowd. None of these are delivery destinations — a public garden has nobody to sign for a vase — but all of them are reasons to have the arrangement waiting at home two hours later. Tell the shop the time you actually need it in place and let them build the route backward from there rather than from the cutoff.
