About Columbia get-well

How Columbia sends get-well flowers.

West of the bench everything changes at the water. Lexington Medical Center is independent of both Prisma Health and MUSC, it carries an enormous share of this market's admissions, and it is reached only over the Gervais Street bridge, the Blossom Street bridge or Jarvis Klapman — three crossings that all stack up, none with an escape once a van is on it. A subtler trap sits on this spoke: the same name is on outpatient community medical centers at Irmo, Lexington, Chapin, Northeast Columbia, Gilbert, Swansea, Batesburg-Leesville and Otarre Pointe in Cayce, where nobody stays the night, so establish whether she is at the hospital or at an appointment she will have left by two. The southeast spoke is federal. The Dorn VA at 6439 Garners Ferry Road is among the busiest VA hospitals in the Southeast, on a campus that also houses the USC School of Medicine, a clinic tower and a community living center; the words the VA are a landmark, not an address, and a driver holding only that will circle. Building, floor, bed, plus a mobile number for long-term residents who may be at therapy. Then Fort Jackson, which is genuinely unusual: the Army's largest basic-training installation lies inside the city limits on the east side, and Moncrief Army Health Clinic is behind its gate, which no commercial van clears. Use an off-post address, on-post family housing with the sponsor meeting the driver, or the hotel on Two Notch or Garners Ferry where family flew in.

Delivery details to prepare

Delivery destinations in Columbia.

Prisma Health Baptist — 1330 Taylor Street

The shortest hospital run in Columbia: under a mile from the Gervais Street bench, east past the State House grounds and four blocks north. General medical, surgical and maternity floors are the most forgiving in the city. Baptist Parkridge is a dozen miles out at Harbison off I-26.

Prisma Health Richland + Children's Hospital–Midlands

Richland Medical Park Drive off Colonial Drive, three miles north — the Midlands' only Level I trauma center and a USC School of Medicine teaching campus. Trauma, neuro intensive care and burn beds take nothing into the room. The children's service bans latex; its neonatal unit accepts nothing at all.

Colonial Drive long stays: Encompass Health and the Ronald McDonald House

The same road north of downtown carries the city's weeks-long admissions. Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Columbia is the one inpatient setting where a living plant clearly beats cut stems, and the Ronald McDonald House near the Richland campus is where a neonatal family is often living.

MUSC Health Columbia — Forest Drive and Gateway Corporate Boulevard

The Forest Drive hospital, four miles east, answered to the name Providence until 2019 and many callers still give that name, so confirm before ordering. The Northeast campus on Gateway Corporate Boulevard is eleven or twelve miles out toward I-77 — a separate drive entirely.

Lexington Medical Center — 2720 Sunset Boulevard, West Columbia

Independent of Prisma Health and MUSC, and the only destination on this page needing a river crossing — Gervais Street, Blossom Street or Jarvis Klapman. The same name sits on outpatient community medical centers at Irmo, Lexington, Chapin, Northeast Columbia, Gilbert, Swansea, Batesburg-Leesville and Otarre Pointe in Cayce.

Dorn VA Medical Center — 6439 Garners Ferry Road

Five miles southeast, among the busiest VA hospitals in the Southeast, sharing its grounds with the USC School of Medicine, a clinic tower and a community living center. Building, floor and room are all required, plus a family mobile for residents who may be at therapy when the driver arrives.

Fort Jackson, Moncrief Army Health Clinic and visiting family

The Army's largest basic-training installation sits inside Columbia's city limits on the east side, and Moncrief is behind its gate, which no commercial van clears. Use an off-post address, family housing with the sponsor meeting the driver, or the hotel where a trainee's family flew in.

Discharge day and senior living across Richland and Lexington counties

Where most Columbia get-well flowers are best aimed, since stays are short and the recovery at home is the longer half. Shandon, Rosewood, Forest Acres, Earlewood, Cayce, Irmo and Lexington are standard runs, as are Still Hopes, Laurel Crest, The Lowman Home at White Rock and the Brookdale communities.

FAQ

Columbia flower delivery FAQs.

What will a trauma or neuro floor at Prisma Health Richland accept?

Into the room, nothing. Richland is the Midlands' only Level I trauma center, and its trauma service, neuroscience intensive care unit and burn beds keep flowers out as standing policy rather than case by case, so no design gets past it and there is nothing to negotiate. What works is a handoff: ask which lobby or surgical waiting area the family has settled into — during a long admission that answer is stable for days — and we deliver to a person rather than a room. If nobody can meet the driver, hold the order and send it to the house for the day they come home.

Our grandson is in the neonatal unit at the children's hospital. What can we send?

Not flowers, and not to that floor. The neonatal unit on the Richland campus takes nothing through its doors — no cut stems, no plant, no foil balloon — and the wider children's service bans latex, so elsewhere in that building it is mylar or nothing. Send instead to wherever the parents are sleeping: their own address, a grandparent's kitchen, or the Ronald McDonald House on Colonial Drive, a short walk from the campus, where a newborn's family may be staying for weeks. Give us a mobile number rather than a room and the driver will put it in a hand.

Can you deliver to the Dorn VA, or to Moncrief on Fort Jackson?

The Dorn VA at 6439 Garners Ferry Road, yes, but it needs more than its name. The campus is large enough to hold the University of South Carolina School of Medicine alongside a clinic tower and a community living center, so a driver with only the words the VA will drive in circles. Give us building, floor and room, plus a family mobile for long-term care residents, who are often at therapy mid-morning. Moncrief is another matter: it sits behind a credentialed Fort Jackson gate that no commercial van passes. Use an off-post address, family housing with a gate meet, or the family's hotel.

Does a Columbia summer really affect a get-well delivery?

It does, and the city calls itself Famously Hot for good reason. From June into mid-September the Congaree valley holds above ninety-five well past lunch, and the cargo space of a van is hotter than the street — hydrangea and anything cut short suffers first. For a hospital floor we book the morning window, which also gets the arrangement through a lobby desk while a shift is still around to carry it up. For a house, send a phone number so a person opens the door rather than leaving it standing on a porch in full sun.

They are recovering at home, in a dorm at USC, or in senior living. What changes?

Almost every restriction falls away and one new one appears: somebody has to open the door. Nothing needs to clear a nurses' station at a Shandon, Rosewood, Forest Acres, Earlewood, Cayce or Irmo address, so send the scented, generous thing they actually like. A University of South Carolina residence hall routes through a front desk that will hold a delivery, so give the building name and the student's phone. At Still Hopes, Laurel Crest, The Lowman Home at White Rock or a Brookdale community the desk routes to an apartment — give the unit, and aim between breakfast and mid-morning therapy.
