The neighborhood-by-neighborhood picture is worth having, because Charleston's residential map is a set of shelves rather than a grid and the door matters more than the mile. The East End in 25301 and 25311 is the walkable part: Victorian and early-1900s houses along Virginia Street East and Quarrier Street, deep front porches, storm doors, and a real chance somebody answers. The West Side around Washington Street West is dense older housing with the same porch advantage. Kanawha City in 25304 is the flat numbered grid running off MacCorkle Avenue SE - the most legible addresses in the city, and the quickest runs. North of the Elk, the rest of 25302 climbs toward Coonskin Park and Yeager Airport, whose runway was cut flat across a mountaintop, which is why half that drive is uphill. South Hills in 25314 stacks up the ridge along Bridge Road and Louden Heights, with Edgewood on the shelf beside it - short steep driveways, tight turns, and a genuine argument for writing "covered porch" into the order. Out past the city line, Sissonville and Cross Lanes fill 25312 and 25313, South Charleston and the Southridge area take 25303 and 25309 with Dunbar a few minutes downriver, and the creek roads - Loudendale, Davis Creek, Campbells Creek, the Elk River settlements toward Elkview and Clendenin - are where a phone number on the order is worth more than an address, because house numbers on those roads are frequently not visible from a moving vehicle.
Who actually gets just-because flowers in Charleston is a fairly specific list, and it is not mostly romantic. Nurses and techs on the CAMC campuses - General downtown, Memorial out in Kanawha City, Women and Children's up Pennsylvania Avenue - and at Thomas Memorial in South Charleston and Saint Francis on Laidley Street, after a week that went badly; those go to a unit desk or a break room rather than to a person on shift, because a nurse mid-rounds is nowhere a driver can find her. Teachers, whose flowers land at a main office rather than a classroom - Capital High on the West Side, George Washington High up in South Hills, Charleston Catholic down in the East End, and every other Kanawha County school - with the room number written onto the card. State employees in the Capitol Complex in 25305, where a delivery goes to a building reception desk and the building number matters more than the room. Someone's mother in a house she has lived in for forty years, which in a city where people stay put is the single most common just-because address on this board. And neighbors after a bad stretch - this valley has a long institutional memory for high water, and the June 2016 floods through Clendenin and Elkview are still a reference point in conversation here. A just-because arrangement sent a week after the news trucks leave lands harder than one sent the day it happened, and that timing instinct is worth having.
