Sympathy is the one occasion where the address is a schedule rather than a place. Wichita funerals run to a recognizable rhythm: a visitation at the mortuary chapel the evening before, often a rosary or vigil for Catholic families, a funeral Mass or service mid-morning the next day, a graveside committal after, and a luncheon in a parish or church hall. Flowers sent to the chapel need to be there before the visitation opens, not during it — by early afternoon on the day of the viewing at the latest, and the night before if the service itself is at nine or ten in the morning. That timing is not a courtesy detail. A mortuary chapel may hold two or three families in a single day, and an arrangement that arrives while the room is being turned over ends up in a back hallway waiting for a staff member who is currently occupied.
The mortuary map is compact and mostly strung along a few corridors. Downing & Lahey Mortuary runs an East Chapel on East Central and a West Chapel on West Maple, covering the two halves of the city. Cochran Mortuary & Crematory is on North Broadway, the same corridor Leeker's Floral works out of at 6223 N. Broadway St., which makes it one of the shortest sympathy runs on the grid. Resthaven Mortuary, Cemetery & Crematory sits far west on West Kellogg, where the funeral home and the memorial gardens share one address, so the chapel service and the committal happen on the same property. Lakeview Funeral Home and Cemetery and Old Mission Mortuary both sit on the north-east side, Lakeview on East 13th Street North and Old Mission on East 21st Street North, each with its own cemetery attached. Broadway Mortuary covers the south Broadway side of town, and Jackson Mortuary on East 13th Street North has served Wichita's Black community for generations. South of the city, Smith Mortuary in Derby handles much of the Derby and Rose Hill load. For the older burials the cemeteries themselves are the destination: Maple Grove and Highland on North Hillside, Highland being the oldest ground in the city, along with Old Mission, Lakeview and Resthaven Gardens of Memory. The Kansas Veterans' Cemetery at Winfield sits inside the widened 60-mile search radius.
Churches carry a share of Wichita services rather than the mortuary chapels. The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception on North Broadway is the seat of the Catholic Diocese of Wichita and the setting for the city's larger Catholic funerals; Church of the Magdalen on East 21st Street North does the same work on the east side. First United Methodist downtown on North Broadway, Central Christian Church on North Rock Road and Eastminster Presbyterian on North Webb all hold funerals with their own sacristan or facilities staff who will tell you exactly where flowers may stand, which is usually one specific side of the chancel and nowhere else. St. George Orthodox Christian Cathedral on East 13th Street North follows Orthodox conventions, and the traditions in Wichita's Jewish and Muslim communities generally point away from flowers at the service itself and toward a memorial gift, or a plant or food sent to the family's home afterward. When you are not sure, the funeral director knows; put the family surname and the service time in the order notes and the shop can call the chapel before building the piece.
