Flowers for Sylva, NC

Stand on Main Street in Sylva and the town orients itself for you: the columned old Jackson County courthouse sits on its hill at the head of the street, a brick-and-stone climb of steps above the storefronts, and everything downtown fans out below it along Scott Creek. Deliveries here follow that grade. A driver drops a get-well arrangement at Harris Regional Hospital out on US-23 Business, works the shops and second-floor apartments downtown, then swings through the residential pockets off Skyland Drive and up toward Dillsboro before pointing the van down NC-107 to Cullowhee, where Western Carolina University keeps a year-round rhythm of graduation, birthday, and dorm-drop orders. The mountains stretch the clock — a run out toward Whittier and the Qualla line, or up the Tuckasegee toward Cashiers, is measured in switchbacks, not miles — but the town core is tight and quick.
