Flowers for Andrews, NC

Tucked into the Valley River bottom between the Snowbird and Nantahala ranges, Andrews is about as far west as North Carolina goes before the state runs into Tennessee and Georgia. The railroad laid the town out on a tidy grid — Main and Chestnut, Locust and Cherry — and the old depot still marks the center; from there streets climb quickly into forest. It is a place where an order might go to a tidy in-town bungalow one afternoon and to a cabin up a switchback toward Marble the next. The Western Carolina Regional Airport on the edge of town, the schools, and the churches that carry the sympathy calendar are the steady stops, and because the nearest hospital sits over in Murphy, get-well flowers usually travel down US-19 rather than staying in the valley. Winter weather and mountain daylight shape every route, so afternoon deliveries get planned around the drive, not just the address.
