About St. Petersburg just-because

How St. Petersburg sends just-because flowers.

Residential St. Petersburg rewards a driver who knows it, and the neighborhood texture is unusually varied for a city this size. The Historic Old Northeast still has its brick streets, granite curbs and hexagonal-block sidewalks, with many houses using a rear alley garage as the working entrance — so "front door" and "the door they actually use" are often two different places, and it is worth saying which you mean. Historic Kenwood, west of Mirror Lake, is the densest stretch of 1920s bungalows in the city, deep-porched and shaded, and the most forgiving address in the county for leaving something out of the sun. Crescent Heights and Euclid-St. Paul north of there are quiet grids of small houses on tight lots. Roser Park near the downtown hospitals is the oddity: brick streets on genuine slopes with Booker Creek running through it, which is not a sentence you write about many Florida neighborhoods. South of Central, the Deuces along 22nd Street South and the Midtown blocks around it are the city's historic Black business and residential district; Coquina Key and the Old Southeast are cottage grids on the water; Pinellas Point at the bottom of the peninsula is the neighborhood with the pink-tinted pavement; and Disston Heights and the 49th Street corridor are the plain, solid mid-century streets nearest two of our benches. Gulfport, technically its own city, behaves like a separate village with a main street on Beach Boulevard.

Which brings up the single most useful thing on this page, and it is a seasonal-residency problem rather than a floral one. Pinellas County has one of the largest seasonal populations in the United States: from roughly January through March a substantial share of the condominiums along Gulf Boulevard, in the downtown towers, and in the golf communities off the Bayway are occupied, and from June through September a substantial share of those same units are empty and shuttered. A just-because delivery is by definition unannounced, which makes it the single category most likely to arrive at a dark apartment. So before you order to a seasonal address, ask whether the recipient is in residence this month; if you are not sure, send it to the front desk of the building rather than to the door, or ask us to attempt a call first. The inverse is also worth knowing: January to March is the busiest quarter on this grid and the traffic on 4th Street North, Central Avenue and 66th Street is at its worst, so a mid-season delivery wants a morning window. Year-round residents in the bungalow neighborhoods are the easy half of this category; the snowbird half needs one question answered first.

Delivery details to prepare

Delivery destinations in St. Petersburg.

Historic Old Northeast and Crescent Heights

Brick streets, granite curbs and hexagonal-block sidewalks, with many houses working out of a rear alley garage rather than the front door. Name the door you want used, and in summer name a shaded spot — the afternoon sun here decides whether an unannounced delivery survives.

Historic Kenwood and the Mirror Lake blocks

The city's densest stretch of 1920s bungalows, deep-porched and shaded, and the most forgiving address on the grid for leaving something out of the sun. A short run from both 33710 benches, which makes it the quickest everyday route in St. Petersburg.

The Deuces, Midtown and Roser Park

The historic Black business and residential district along 22nd Street South, the Midtown blocks around it, and Roser Park's brick streets on genuine slopes beside Booker Creek — an unusual piece of topography for Florida and an easy one to mis-navigate without a phone number.

Seasonal condominiums on Gulf Boulevard and the downtown towers

Full from January through March and largely empty from June through September, which makes them the addresses most likely to receive an unannounced delivery at a dark door. Use the building's front desk, or confirm the recipient is in residence before ordering.

Shore Acres, Riviera Bay and Coquina Key

Low waterfront grids northeast and southeast of downtown where a king tide can put salt water across a street with no rain involved. Those are morning runs, and on a flooding afternoon a reschedule beats a wet doorstep.

Gulfport, Disston Heights and the 49th Street corridor

Gulfport behaves like its own small town with a main street on Beach Boulevard; Disston Heights and the 49th Street corridor are the plain mid-century grids nearest two of our benches, which makes them the fastest and cheapest everyday routes on this grid.

FAQ

St. Petersburg flower delivery FAQs.

Nobody may be home. Where should the driver leave it?

Tell us in the notes and we will follow the instruction, because a just-because delivery is unannounced by definition and the odds of an empty house are high. What works in this city: a screened porch, a shaded side door, a carport, a neighbor who will take it in, or an apartment front desk. What does not work is a west-facing step in the afternoon between June and September, where an arrangement has under an hour. In the Old Northeast, where many houses use a rear alley garage as their working entrance, name the door. On a Shore Acres street holding tidal water, we would rather reschedule than leave anything.

My mother is only here for the winter. Does that matter?

It matters more than anything else on this page. Pinellas has one of the largest seasonal populations in the country: the Gulf Boulevard condominiums, the downtown towers and the communities off the Bayway are full from January through March and substantially empty from June through September. Since a just-because delivery is unannounced, it is the category most likely to reach a shuttered unit. Confirm the recipient is in residence this month, or send it to the building's front desk rather than the door, or ask us to call ahead. And expect mid-season traffic: January to March is the busiest quarter here, so book mornings.

Which neighborhoods do you deliver to?

All of them inside an 18-mile radius of 33701, which covers the whole city and a good deal of the county: the Historic Old Northeast, Historic Kenwood, Crescent Heights, Euclid-St. Paul, Historic Uptown, Roser Park, the Deuces and Midtown along 22nd Street South, Old Southeast, Coquina Key, Lakewood Estates, Pinellas Point, Broadwater, Disston Heights, Jungle Terrace, Shore Acres and Riviera Bay, plus Gulfport, South Pasadena, Kenneth City, Pinellas Park, Seminole, Largo, St. Pete Beach, Treasure Island, Madeira Beach and Tierra Verde. Our two closest benches on 49th Street North and 38th Avenue North are 5.4 miles from the centroid; the furthest, in Seminole, is 10.9.

Which flowers survive a Florida afternoon?

Ask for carnation, alstroemeria, gerbera, hardy chrysanthemum, lisianthus, stock or solidago, all of which tolerate a warm van and a wait at a front desk. Florida grows a great deal of the cut foliage used in American floristry, so the greens in a St. Petersburg vase are frequently local. Avoid hydrangea unless somebody will be home to put it straight in water; it is the first thing to collapse here. Ask for a weighted vase rather than a tall narrow one, since the arrangement will be moved at least twice, and from June to September book a morning window so it is not sitting out through the storm hour.

Can you deliver to an apartment or condo front desk?

Yes, and in this city that is the most reliable handoff available. The towers along 1st Street South and Beach Drive downtown, the Gulf Boulevard beach condominiums and the larger complexes in Pinellas Park and Largo nearly all have a desk or a management office that will accept and hold an arrangement. Give us the building, the unit number and a phone number for the recipient. For gated communities off the Pinellas Bayway — Bayway Isles has a staffed entrance, and Isla del Sol and Tierra Verde are long loops of cul-de-sacs — the recipient's name and phone number on the order is what gets the van through.
