Four things: which system, which campus, the patient's name as the hospital has it recorded, and the unit or room if you know it. Springfield runs two hospital systems whose flagships are four miles apart on different streets — Cox South at 3801 South National in 65807, Mercy Hospital Springfield at 1235 East Cherokee in 65804 — plus Cox North at 1423 North Jefferson in 65802. An order that says only Springfield hospital cannot be delivered, and a patient admitted under a maiden or legal name that differs from what the family calls them is the second most common snag. If the patient has been moved between floors, the front desk will still find them by name.

Ask the unit first. Many intensive-care units at either Springfield flagship will not allow flowers into the room, and what arrives goes to the unit desk or sits in a family lounge. Some discharge addresses fall outside that circle: West Plains, Joplin and Harrison, Arkansas are past 60 miles from the centroid, and we would rather say so than accept an order no van can drive. Flowers that arrive after a patient leaves the floor do not follow them. A plant sent home does, so if the discharge day is uncertain, planted is the low-risk choice.

With caveats. Behavioral-health units at Burrell Behavioral Health on East Bradford Parkway and at Lakeland Behavioral Health on South Market restrict what can be brought onto a unit, so call the unit before ordering — in most cases a card plus a delivery to the family's home is the send that actually reaches the person. Jordan Valley Community Health Center on East Tampa is an outpatient operation, so a get-well arrangement left there will not follow the patient home.
