The second Rockford variable is the Rock River itself, and it is not decoration. The city is built on both banks, and a driver's day is shaped by which bridge they use — State Street, Jefferson Street, Whitman Street, Auburn Street, Morgan Street. An order that crosses the water twice costs more time than the mileage suggests, which is why the routes group the way they do. On the near northwest, off North Main and Auburn, sit Churchill's Grove and Signal Hill, older housing with deep front porches and driveways that a driver walks up rather than into, plus Edgewater and the North End grid in 61103. South and east of downtown are Haight Village and the Broadway stretch in 61104, brick streets and close-set houses. Out east in 61107 are Rolling Green, the Alpine Road and Spring Creek neighbourhoods, and the East State retail spine; 61108 covers Charles Street and the streets around Rockford University; 61114 runs to Guilford Square, Perryville Road and the Bell School edge by the tollway. West and south are the 61101, 61102 and 61109 grids, then Loves Park at 61111 and Machesney Park at 61115 above them.
Birthday volume in this market leans harder on workplaces than most cities its size, because Rockford is a shift town. Downtown, the desk drops go to the Winnebago County Courthouse block and the county and city offices around West State and Elm, the law and title offices woven through them, and the Rockford Register Star building on East State. The East State Street corridor carries the rest, offices and clinics stacked between Alpine and Perryville out toward the tollway. On the industrial side, Collins Aerospace keeps its Rockford plant on Harrison Avenue — the operation Rockford still calls Sundstrand — and Woodward runs its Rockford-area campus up in Loves Park. South, at Chicago Rockford International Airport, the cargo apron holds the UPS regional air hub and an Amazon Air operation, and that side of the city works nights: if the birthday belongs to somebody on a sort shift, the bouquet goes to the house in the afternoon while they are asleep or awake at home, not to a gate at two in the morning. Campus drops run to Rockford University at 5050 E. State St. and Rock Valley College on North Mulford, and the District 205 front offices take the teacher birthdays.
