About Rochester just-because

How Rochester sends just-because flowers.

Rochester is the only city on this map that renamed itself after a flower. Through the early 1800s it was the Flour City — the Genesee River drops nearly 300 feet inside the city limits, and the mills on those falls milled more wheat than anywhere in the country. Then the mills moved west and the nurseries took over: George Ellwanger and Patrick Barry opened Mount Hope Nurseries in 1840 on the slopes south of downtown and grew it into one of the largest nursery operations in the world, shipping trees and roses out of Rochester by rail and catalog until the city was known as the Flower City instead. The two of them later handed the city the first parcel of what became Highland Park, laid out with Frederick Law Olmsted's involvement, and the lilac collection planted there is the reason a hundred thousand people walk the same hillside every May for the Lilac Festival. The neighborhood below it still carries the nurserymen's names on its street signs, and Sacred Heart Cathedral sits on a street called Flower City Park. None of that history makes a bouquet cheaper. What it does mean is that sending flowers for no reason at all is not an eccentric gesture in this city — it is closer to a local habit, and the eight studios on the Rochester grid do a large share of their volume on exactly those orders.

FAQ

Rochester flower delivery FAQs.

Can I send just-because flowers same-day in Rochester?

Same-day options depend on the delivery ZIP, requested date, florist availability and that florist's local cutoff. Check the available options before paying; a city listing does not guarantee delivery today.

Which Rochester neighborhoods get everyday porch delivery?

All of them, and the drivers route by neighborhood name rather than ZIP. Park Avenue and the Neighborhood of the Arts are 14607; the South Wedge and Swillburg are 14620; Corn Hill is 14608; Browncroft and Cobbs Hill are 14610; Beechwood, Culver-Merchants and North Winton Village are 14609; Maplewood is 14613; Charlotte is 14612; the 19th Ward and Bulls Head are 14611; Marketview Heights and the North Clinton corridor are 14605 and 14621. The 18-mile ring then reaches Brighton 14618, Pittsford 14534, Fairport 14450, Penfield 14526, Webster 14580, Irondequoit 14617 and 14622, Greece 14612 through 14626, Gates and Chili 14624 and Henrietta 14623.

Can you deliver flowers to a teacher or a school office in Rochester?

Yes, and it is one of the steadiest everyday patterns here. The Rochester City School District plus the suburban districts — Brighton, Pittsford, Penfield, Webster, Greece, West Irondequoit, Gates Chili, Fairport, Rush-Henrietta, Spencerport and Hilton — are all inside the live ring. School front offices accept deliveries and hold them rather than interrupting a class, so send the recipient's full name and the school name and skip the room number. Aim for mid-morning to early afternoon: a delivery that arrives after the last bell sits in an empty office overnight. The same applies to campus departments at RIT, the University of Rochester, Nazareth, St. John Fisher and MCC.

What do Rochester senders order in the middle of winter?

Plants and bright color, mostly, and they order a lot of them. This is a long overcast winter in a lake-effect city, and the biggest everyday block on the Rochester calendar runs from January into March: a potted design such as the Sweet as a Daisy Plant that lives past the week, or a bright hand-tied bouquet of gerbera, alstroemeria and spray rose for somebody who has had eight weeks of grey. The other winter spike is gratitude after a snow band lets up — the neighbor who cleared a driveway or dug out a car. In a squall, order a day ahead and expect a window rather than an hour.

What happens if nobody is home when the flowers arrive?

The driver's first move is a sheltered spot — a covered porch or a side door out of the weather — with a note left, which works for most of the Park Avenue, South Wedge, Browncroft and 19th Ward routes where porches are deep. In hard cold, heavy snow or high heat that is not safe for the flowers, the driver calls the number on the order and either waits for direction or returns the arrangement to the shop for a second attempt. Add a phone number, a buzzer name for an apartment, and a neighbor or workplace as a fallback if the recipient is away all day.
