Anniversary flowers in Raleigh

Raleigh's anniversary hotel map is small and unusually good. The Umstead Hotel and Spa (100 Woodland Pond Drive, Cary 27513) is the region's flagship — a Forbes-rated property backing onto a lake and a sculpture-dotted lawn, with Herons as its dining room; it sits nearest Preston Flowers and Gcg Flowers. The StateView Hotel, an Autograph Collection property on NC State's Centennial Campus, is the alumni-anniversary default and looks out over Lake Raleigh. Downtown holds Raleigh Marriott City Center at 500 Fayetteville Street, the Sheraton Raleigh Hotel at 421 S Salisbury Street beside the Convention Center, The Longleaf Hotel on North Dawson Street, Origin Hotel Raleigh on West Morgan Street, and Heights House Hotel, the small restored mansion on South Bloodworth Street. Midtown adds the Renaissance Raleigh North Hills Hotel at 4100 Main at North Hills Street and the AC Hotel Raleigh North Hills in the same block. Out in Cary, The Mayton on South Academy Street anchors the downtown Cary side. Every one of these takes a concierge or front-desk handoff — which means the guest name on the reservation, not the recipient's nickname, has to be in the order notes, and a delivery before four in the afternoon is far more reliable than one after.

The dinner half of Raleigh anniversary volume concentrates in a handful of rooms. The Angus Barn on Glenwood Avenue is the institution — a rambling barn with a Wine Spectator Grand Award cellar and the separate Pavilion for larger parties, and it is the single most-requested anniversary reservation in Wake County. Second Empire Restaurant and Tavern at 330 Hillsborough Street occupies the 1879 Dodd-Hinsdale House downtown, one of the city's most-photographed anniversary settings. Herons at The Umstead in Cary is the tasting-menu option. Downtown carries Poole's Diner on South McDowell Street, Death & Taxes, St. Roch Fine Oysters + Bar, Vidrio on Glenwood Avenue, Mulino Italian Kitchen and Bar on North Dawson Street, Crawford and Son on North Person Street, Garland, Bida Manda and Brewery Bhavana on South Blount Street, Jimmy V's Osteria, and Irregardless Cafe on West Morgan Street; Midtown has Sullivan's Steakhouse on the Glenwood South side and Ruth's Chris at North Hills; and Iris sits inside the North Carolina Museum of Art. A table piece for any of these needs to be low — nothing that blocks a sightline across a two-top — and it needs to arrive before the room fills.
