A Providence birthday delivery usually ends at a second-floor door. The city's housing stock leans hard on the New England three-decker — Elmhurst, Mount Pleasant, Smith Hill, Silver Lake, Olneyville, Federal Hill, the West End, Elmwood, Upper South Providence and Washington Park are block after block of two- and three-family houses with a shared front stoop, one buzzer panel and a recipient who may be at the back of the third floor. That single fact drives most of what goes right or wrong with a birthday order here. A driver who knows Providence asks for the unit or the floor, not just the street number, and looks for the side entrance on the driveway when the front porch is a mailbox wall. On the East Side the geometry flips: College Hill, Blackstone, Wayland Square and the Hope Street corridor are single-family and historic, with narrow one-way colonial streets — Benefit Street's Mile of History, the Angell and Waterman one-way pair, the steep pitch up from South Main — where the hard part is parking rather than finding the door. Downtown and the Jewelry District are a third pattern again: lobby desks, security sign-in and a building that empties at five.
Office birthdays here are concentrated in a walkable downtown, which is unusual and useful. Textron's headquarters at 40 Westminster Street, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Rhode Island at 500 Exchange Street, Citizens at One Citizens Plaza by the river confluence, Gilbane Building Company at 7 Jackson Walkway and United Natural Foods at 313 Iron Horse Way are all inside a short loop, and a driver can clear several of them on one trip if the orders land before the lunch hour. The Jewelry District — the old costume-jewelry manufacturing heart, now Brown's Warren Alpert Medical School on Richmond Street and the life-sciences and startup floors along Dyer and Richmond — is the newer desk-drop cluster. Worth knowing what is *not* a delivery address: the Superman Building at 111 Westminster, the 1928 Industrial Trust tower that is still the tallest thing in Rhode Island, has stood vacant since 2013, and a surprising number of out-of-state senders try to send flowers there. Outside the core, the corporate ring is a loop of highway exits: FM Global on Central Avenue in Johnston, the Citizens campus on Citizens Drive in Johnston, Amica Mutual on Amica Way in Lincoln, Fidelity's Salem Street campus in Smithfield, and CVS Health at One CVS Drive in Woonsocket at the far northern edge of the 18-mile radius. Because Rhode Island is small, that radius also crosses the state line — Seekonk, Attleboro and North Attleborough addresses are closer to the centroid than Coventry is.
