Flowers for Oakland City, IN

Oakland City runs on two things you can see from Columbia Street: a small Baptist university and a century of coal underneath the fields around it. Oakland City University anchors the north side of town off Lucretia Street, and its calendar drives a steady rhythm of recital, homecoming, and graduation flowers; the rest of town is a tidy Gibson County grid of frame houses and church corners, ringed by the strip-mine lakes and grain roads that run out toward Winslow and Petersburg. Deliveries here are short and personal — a get-well arrangement to a Columbia Street porch, a birthday drop at a dorm, a sympathy piece to one of the county funeral homes — and the town is small enough that the hardest part is usually finding the right dorm door, not the miles.
