New Haven's anniversary geography is unusually compact, and that is the practical advantage of celebrating one here. Nearly everything an anniversary evening needs sits inside a five-block rectangle bounded by the Green, Temple Street, Chapel Street and High Street: the Omni New Haven Hotel at Yale at 155 Temple Street, whose nineteenth-floor dining room looks straight down the Green; The Study at Yale at 1157 Chapel Street, across from the Yale Center for British Art; The Blake at 9 High Street; the Graduate on Chapel Street in the old Hotel Duncan building; and the restaurant row — Union League Cafe at 1032 Chapel Street, Zinc at 964 Chapel, Olea on High Street, and the wine bar on Temple Street. Walk ten minutes in the other direction and you are on Wooster Street, where Frank Pepe has been making apizza at 157 Wooster since 1925 and Sally's at 237 Wooster since 1938, with Consiglio's at 165 Wooster in between — which for a lot of New Haven couples is the anniversary dinner, no reservation, ninety minutes in line, and no possibility of a flower pre-set. Knowing which of those two evenings you are having is the whole trick to timing an anniversary delivery in this city.
For the hotel version, front-desk delivery is the reliable route and the reservation name is the load-bearing detail. The Omni, The Study, The Blake and the Hotel Marcel at 500 Sargent Drive — the Marcel Breuer-designed former Armstrong Rubber building on Long Wharf, now run as a net-zero hotel — will all hold an arrangement and place it in the room or hand it over at check-in when the order carries the name the room is booked under. Put your partner's name on the card and the booking name on the delivery details; those are often not the same person, and a front desk will not guess. Two calendar weeks are worth avoiding if you can: Yale commencement in May and reunion weekends in late spring, when every downtown hotel is full, the desks are stacked with luggage and packages, and a same-day arrangement competes with two hundred check-ins. Order a day early in those windows. Outside the core, anniversary parties use the banquet rooms: the New Haven Lawn Club on Whitney Avenue, Anthony's Ocean View on Lighthouse Road in East Haven, Amarante's Sea Cliff on Cove Street in Morris Cove, and the Branford halls. Those take a morning delivery and hold in a cooler or a back room, which is a different and easier ask than a restaurant table.
