The hotel hand-off is the anniversary order that goes wrong most often, and it is entirely avoidable. Morgantown's four useful anniversary addresses are Waterfront Place Hotel at 2 Waterfront Place, down on the Monongahela at the foot of the Wharf District and the closest thing this city has to a grand-occasion hotel; the Hotel Morgan at the top of High Street, a 1925 building that has been the town's landmark hotel for a century and is inside walking distance of Coomb's bench; Euro-Suites up on Chestnut Ridge Road, which sits nearer the hospital and the Evansdale side; and Lakeview out at Cheat Lake, off I-68, which is where couples from this region go when they want water and a golf course rather than a downtown. The chain hotels clustered around the University Town Centre in Granville take the overflow. Three things make a hotel delivery land: the surname the room is booked under, the check-in time, and a mobile number. Hand it to the front desk and it waits at the front desk; give a phone number and it gets into the room. And book early — every one of these fills solid on home football Saturdays, at May commencement and over Family Weekend, which are also the weekends people most often choose for a celebration.
The restaurant drop is a smaller, sharper problem here, because Morgantown's fine-dining bench is short and everyone in town knows the same names. Oliverio's Ristorante down in the Wharf District by the river, Table 9 and Sargasso downtown, Puglioni's on Pleasant Street and the Iron Horse Tavern are where a serious anniversary dinner in this city actually happens, and on a Friday or Saturday in season they are full. That produces the most distinctive anniversary behaviour in this market: Morgantown couples celebrate on a Tuesday. A home football weekend makes a Saturday reservation close to impossible, commencement weekend does the same in May, and so the actual dinner slides to a weeknight — which is convenient, because a weeknight table drop is much easier to time than a weekend one. If you want flowers waiting at the table rather than carried in, call the restaurant yourself first and ask whether they will take a delivery at all; a small kitchen on a busy night may prefer not to. When the answer is no, the reliable version is a morning delivery to the house so the piece is on the counter before either of them has left for work.
Residential anniversary routes in Morgantown split along the hills. South Park, on the slope below Walnut, is the historic district — brick streets, deep porches, the houses that have changed hands within the same few families for generations — and it is also where a driver most often cannot park in front of the address, so a call-ahead there is worth more than anywhere else in the city. Suncrest and the Van Voorhis and Stewartstown Road corridors on the north side hold much of the university and hospital professional class, in newer houses on flatter ground with driveways. Star City sits on the river below Suncrest; Westover and Granville are across the bridges; Sabraton runs east on Earl Core Road; and the Cheat Lake shoreline off I-68, including the Cheat Neck side, is the county's premium residential water frontage. Out past that, the 60-mile radius reaches Kingwood and the ridge towns of Preston County, Masontown and Reedsville down the Deckers Creek valley, Grafton and Fairmont on the southern side, and over the state lines into Greene and Fayette counties and as far east as Garrett County, Maryland. Anything more than half an hour out should be a morning order, and from November into March the Preston County high ground can be in weather the river valley is not.
