Lomita does not look romantic, and that is rather the point. It is 1.9 square miles of bungalows, apartment courts, muffler shops and taquerias along Pacific Coast Highway, with Narbonne Avenue running past City Hall, a replica Victorian train depot on 250th Street with a Southern Pacific Mogul locomotive parked behind it, and a single ZIP code, 90717. What makes it romantic is what is ten minutes away in three directions. South down Western Avenue and into San Pedro: Point Fermin Lighthouse, standing since 1874 above the harbor mouth; the Korean Friendship Bell in its pavilion at Angels Gate Park, a 1976 Bicentennial gift from South Korea and the single most-used proposal overlook in the harbor area; the collapsed bluff known as Sunken City; Cabrillo Beach. West and up the hill: Malaga Cove, Lunada Bay, Abalone Cove, and the long cliff road on Palos Verdes Drive South. North-west: Torrance Beach at the bottom of the Esplanade, which everyone here still calls RAT Beach for Redondo And Torrance. Romance orders in Lomita are timed against that map far more often than against a restaurant.
One piece of local routing that matters and that no generic florist page will tell you: the ocean side of the Peninsula is actively moving.
