The biggest building inside the Islandia village line is a hotel with a gaming floor. Jake's 58 on Express Drive North sits along the Expressway service road, a converted hotel that reopened as a casino property in 2017 and is now run in partnership with Suffolk Regional Off-Track Betting, and it is where a good share of local anniversary nights begin and end — partly because it is the only hotel with an Islandia address, partly because a couple from Hauppauge or Central Islip can be checked in eight minutes after leaving the house. For flowers this is a helpful kind of venue: the front desk is staffed around the clock, so a delivery does not depend on a concierge shift. It is also an unhelpful one if you improvise. A gaming property has its own security and its own receiving path, and a driver who arrives without a guest name and a reservation surname gets sent in a circle.
Two other hotel clusters sit just outside the village. North on Motor Parkway in Hauppauge is the area's conference hotel, the one that fills up when something is running in the innovation park; the same diagonal alignment that makes Motor Parkway hard to navigate for a desk drop makes it hard here too, so give us the street number and not just the name. East, four miles out, Long Island MacArthur Airport in Ronkonkoma has a hotel strip along Veterans Memorial Highway, which is where the anniversary order for visiting family lands — parents flying in for a 50th, an out-of-town sibling with a Saturday night room. Those front desks will hold an arrangement, but almost none of them will take it into a room before the guest checks in, so the arrival time is the thing to tell us rather than the room number you do not have yet.
Here is the recommendation most anniversary buyers do not expect: do not send flowers to the restaurant. A bouquet delivered to a table has to be carried through the meal, set somewhere during dessert, and driven home on a car seat, and half the time the restaurant has no place to put it while you eat. Send it to the house in the morning instead. The day starts with it on the kitchen table, it is photographed before either of you has left, and the evening is left to be the evening. If the anniversary is a milestone and the couple is hosting, the same logic applies with more force — an arrangement that arrives at ten in the morning survives a day of relatives; one that arrives at six competes with the food coming out of the oven.
The milestone geography here is worth naming because it is real. Islandia incorporated in the mid-1980s, and the subdivisions in and around it — the streets off Old Nichols Road, and the larger 1960s and 1970s tracts in Central Islip 11722, Brentwood 11717, Hauppauge 11788 and Lake Ronkonkoma 11779 — are full of original owners. A 25th, a 40th, a 50th in this ZIP is usually being marked in the same house where the marriage started, which changes what the delivery has to survive: a long driveway, nobody expecting anything, a dog, and a doorbell that nobody hears from the back yard. Give us a mobile number for someone who is not the recipient — a neighbour, a son two streets over — and the surprise stays a surprise instead of becoming a phone call to the person you are surprising.
