The rest of the birthday volume is residential, and Hattiesburg's residential map has a seam down the middle of it. West of town, in Lamar County, the subdivisions off Highway 98 — the blocks around Oak Grove schools, the Canebrake and Bellegrass developments, the Lake Serene area — are new-build, wide-lot, and mostly unlocked in the afternoon, so the arrangement gets a shaded spot by the door and a photo. East of town, across the Leaf River bridge, Petal's streets off Main are older and denser, and Alway's Flowers Ofms is the near shop for all of them. In the Historic Neighborhood District north of downtown the houses are a century old, which in practice means a screen door in front of the real one and nowhere flat to set anything down; those addresses get a knock rather than a leave. And then there are the outer ZIPs that the live search radius reaches because the Pine Belt is thin: Sumrall (39482), Purvis (39475), the 39406 university blocks, plus Petal (39465) and Oak Grove (39402) proper. The radius is set to 60 miles here on purpose — it is what makes a birthday in Seminary, Collins, Ellisville, Brooklyn or Columbia reachable at all from a Hattiesburg-area cooler.
The Hattiesburg birthday calendar also has two predictable squeezes on it, and both are worth planning around in a market this size. The first is the Southern Miss academic year: move-in in August, homecoming week in the fall, the run-up to finals, and May commencement all land birthday orders on the same afternoons as everything else students get sent, and graduation weekend in particular collides with hotel scarcity along US-49. The second is Camp Shelby, south of town on the 49 corridor — Guard households run on rotation schedules, which means a birthday here frequently gets celebrated on the Saturday the family is together rather than on the date itself. That is a feature rather than a problem: tell us the day you actually want it and we will use that, not the birthday on the calendar. Layered over both is the ordinary out-of-state case, which is probably the most common birthday order on this page — somebody who grew up in Hattiesburg or Petal and now lives in Texas, Georgia or Tennessee sending back to a parent who has not moved. For that one, put a landmark or the color of the house in the notes if the address is rural, and expect delivery confirmation by email once it is done.
