Harrisonburg has one hospital, and knowing where it is saves you the first mistake. Sentara RMH Medical Center sits on Health Campus Drive off Port Republic Road at the eastern edge of the city, on the campus it moved to in 2010 - which matters because a surprising number of out-of-town senders still aim at the old Rockingham Memorial building on Cantrell Avenue, a property James Madison University now owns. The new campus is the easiest hospital delivery in this market: real parking, a main entrance a driver can actually reach, and Wishingwellva at 243 Neff Ave is barely five minutes away on that same side of town. What the order needs is boringly specific. The patient's full name exactly as the hospital has it registered, the room number, and a mobile number for a family member who is physically in the building. Room numbers move. A patient who was on one floor at ten in the morning may be somewhere else by two, and the only thing that reliably rescues that delivery is a phone in somebody's pocket rather than a name at a desk.
The harder half of this page starts when a case outgrows the valley. Harrisonburg's referral pattern runs east over the Blue Ridge to UVA Medical Center in Charlottesville - US-33 across Swift Run Gap, or the longer but safer route down I-81 and over I-64 at Afton - and south to Augusta Health at Fishersville, about twenty-five miles down the interstate between Staunton and Waynesboro. Both are entirely deliverable and both change the order. Charlottesville is an hour away on a good day and considerably more when the Gap is fogged in or iced, and once the van arrives it is a large academic medical center with several entrances and a parking structure rather than a lot; that is a delivery to place in the morning, not at a quarter to two. Fishersville is simpler and quicker but it is still another county. The point to take from this: before you order, confirm which building the patient is actually in today. A transfer happens between the phone call you got and the flowers you send, and a hospital does not forward anything to another hospital.
Then the destination nobody puts on a get-well page, which in this valley is as common as the hospital. Harrisonburg and Rockingham County hold three large continuing-care campuses within a short drive - the Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community out on Virginia Avenue, Sunnyside inside the city, and Bridgewater Retirement Community down in Bridgewater - and a great deal of what these three shops carry as get-well work is somebody recovering from a procedure in an apartment, a cottage or a care building on one of those campuses. They are laid out like small villages, so the order needs the building and the apartment, cottage or room number rather than just the community name, and reception is a sound fallback handoff. Keep it small: a cottage kitchen table and an apartment windowsill are not a farmhouse dining room. And ask before sending to a care wing, because those rooms are subject to the same restrictions a hospital floor is. The same logic applies to a sick James Madison student inside 22807 - a residence hall cannot receive a delivery to a room, so it becomes a front-desk handoff and it needs the student's mobile number.
