Flowers for Georgetown, DE

Georgetown was planted dead-center in Sussex County in 1791 for a plain reason — the old county seat at Lewes was too far a wagon ride for the farmers inland — and the town still turns on that idea. Everything orients to The Circle, the green ringed by the courthouse and the old law offices, and once every two years the town holds Return Day, when election results are read aloud from the balcony and the winners and losers ride together in a carriage. For a florist that civic center is the anchor: arrangements go to the courthouse for retirements, to the offices around the green, and to the Delaware Tech Owens Campus just off College Drive for graduations. Beyond the town line the deliveries thin into farm country — the poultry-house roads, Redden State Forest to the north, the Route 113 and Route 9 crossroads carrying traffic between the beaches and the western towns.
