Flowers for Gary, IN

Ask for flowers to a house off Broadway in Glen Park and the order that comes back is pure Gary — practical, on time, made by a shop that knows which side streets flood and which buzzers work. This is the steel city: US Steel's Gary Works still lines the lakefront, the Genesis Center and the old downtown sit along Broadway, and the neighborhoods fan out from Glen Park in the south to Tolleston and Midtown, then all the way up to Miller Beach where the grid gives way to the Indiana Dunes and Lake Michigan. It is Michael Jackson's hometown, an Indiana University Northwest college town, and a full-size Lake County city all at once, which means a delivery day here might run from a get-well drop at Methodist Northlake to a graduation bouquet at IU Northwest to a sympathy arrangement out toward the Merrillville line.
