The floor matters more than the hospital. Every one of these buildings enforces restrictions that have nothing to do with taste and everything to do with infection control and airway safety, and a bouquet that violates them is not delivered late — it is refused at the desk. Intensive care, cardiac intensive care and most step-down units generally take no fresh flowers or plants at all; the accepted workaround is a delivery to the family lounge or the waiting area, addressed to the family rather than the patient. Neonatal intensive care is the strictest room in any of these hospitals and takes nothing living. Oncology, bone-marrow and transplant floors exclude lilies outright, exclude anything heavily scented, and often exclude potted plants because the soil and standing water carry fungal spores that matter enormously to a neutropenic patient. Burn units follow the same soil-and-water logic. Behavioral health units restrict glass vessels and anything with wire or ribbon. On top of all that, essentially every US hospital bans latex balloons for allergy reasons — mylar only, and many floors would rather you skipped balloons entirely. The practical translation for a Flint order: ask for lily-free, low-pollen, low-scent, no potted soil, non-glass vessel and you have a design that clears nearly every floor in Genesee County on the first attempt.
Then there is the discharge problem, which quietly ruins more get-well orders than any floor rule. Hospital stays are short — a routine admission at Hurley, McLaren Flint or Genesys is measured in a few days, not weeks — and a bouquet ordered on day three for a patient going home on day four arrives to an empty room. Before you send, ask whoever gave you the news two questions: is the patient expected home soon, and are they in a restricted unit. If the answer to the first is yes, send to the house instead; a recovery arrangement waiting on the kitchen table when someone walks in after four days on a ward does more than a vase they never saw. Home recovery is also where the Flint radius earns its keep, because our 18-mile working circle covers the places people actually convalesce: the city ZIPs 48502 through 48507, Flint Township in 48532, Burton in 48509, 48519 and 48529, Grand Blanc 48439, Mount Morris 48458, Flushing 48433, Swartz Creek 48473, Davison 48423, Clio 48420, Montrose 48457, with Linden 48451 and Fenton 48430 at the edge. Holly, Lapeer, Owosso and Frankenmuth fall outside it. If a floor does refuse a delivery, our studios do not abandon it — they call and redirect to the home address rather than discard the piece.
