The porch half of Flint birthday work is neighborhood-literate in a way national wire services are not. Carriage Town — the historic district wedged between downtown, Kettering University and the river — is brick sidewalks, tall front steps and 1880s porches, and in January those steps are the whole delivery. Civic Park, the northwest grid General Motors built for its workers starting in 1917, is dense, uniform and easy to misnumber. College Cultural Center, the neighborhood wrapped around the Flint Cultural Center and Mott Community College on East Court Street, runs to deep front setbacks. Mott Park sits along the Flint River on the west side near Kettering. Woodcroft Estates south of Miller Road is the city's big-lot, long-driveway address set. Kearsley Park, Eastside along Davison and Richfield Roads, Grand Traverse District just south of downtown, Glendale Hills, Sunset Village and the Beecher and Pierson Road corridors on the north side round it out. Outside the city line, the same radius carries Flint Township along Miller, Linden and Ballenger, Burton along Belsay, Atherton and Center, Grand Blanc along Hill and Holly Roads, Mount Morris along Genesee and Coldwater, Flushing along the river bluff and Coutant, Swartz Creek, Clio, Davison, Montrose, Gaines and Otisville — ZIPs 48502 through 48507, 48509, 48519, 48529, 48532, 48433, 48439, 48458, 48473, 48423, 48420, 48457 and 48451. Linden and Fenton sit at the outer edge of the 18-mile line; Holly, Lapeer, Owosso and Frankenmuth fall outside it.
