What should the card say if there is no occasion?
+
Say why you sent them, in the first line. Around here an unexplained bouquet reads as bad news — the first reaction to flowers with no reason attached is often a jolt of alarm and a phone call to find out what happened. "No reason, I just thought of you today" removes that instantly, and "thank you for last Saturday" does even better because it names the thing. Avoid a blank card or a signature by itself, which leaves a Midwestern recipient to guess and they will guess wrong. We hand-write exactly the words you give us, so write the sentence you would actually say.
What is the best value in a two-shop market like this?
+
Designer's choice. Both Eau Claire benches buy on the same truck schedule, and what came off this morning's delivery is fresher and goes further than a catalogue photo assembled from whatever is left in the cooler. Order "designer's choice, bright, around fifty dollars" and you will get a better arrangement than you would by picking an image off a grid. Add any restrictions that matter — no lilies if there are cats in the house, nothing heavily scented, keep it low for a small table — and let the person at the bench use their judgment. In a market this size that judgment is the product.
Why would I order flowers when there's a farmers market downtown?
+
In July, you probably should buy the market bunch — Phoenix Park on a Saturday morning is cheap and excellent and we are not going to argue with it. Two things it cannot do: deliver, and exist in January. From mid-November until spring the stalls are gone, this city is dark by half past four, and a delivered arrangement is the only flower anybody is going to see indoors for four months. That is why just-because volume on this grid climbs in February and March rather than in summer, and why fifty dollars spent in the third week of February goes further than the same fifty in June.
Can you deliver a thank-you to a school or a hospital unit?
+
Yes to both, and they are two of the most common everyday orders here. A school office at Memorial, North, Regis or one of the middle schools will take a delivery and hold it for the teacher — keep it low and vased, because it ends up on a classroom desk. For a hospital unit that got your family through a bad week, address it to the unit rather than to one nurse, at Mayo Clinic Health System on Whipple Street or Marshfield Medical Center on Craig Road; the whole floor sees it, which is usually the point. Skip strong fragrance for a shared nursing station.
Can you reach a rural address out in the townships?
+
Usually, with the right information. Township addresses around Fall Creek, Augusta, Colfax, Mondovi and Cadott are written as Wisconsin fire numbers on lettered county roads, so give us the fire number, the letter and the township or nearest village — a rural route number alone will not locate a house. Add a mobile number as well: the driveway can run a quarter of a mile, the mailbox often stands on the opposite side of the road from the buildings, and after a January storm the yard is not necessarily cleared. Same-day works in the city and Altoona ahead of the cutoff; the outer ring is normally next-day.
Is a plant a better everyday gift than cut flowers?
+
Often, in this climate. A green or blooming plant keeps going long after a bouquet is done, and in a dry, heated Wisconsin house through a four-month winter that difference is substantial — the plant is still on the windowsill in April. Plants also suit the recipient who says they do not want you spending money on something that dies. Cut flowers win when you want immediate impact on a kitchen table, when the recipient travels, or when the gift is a thank-you that does not need to become a long-term responsibility. Tell the shop which of those you are aiming at.
Can I set up a repeating delivery?
+
Yes, and a standing monthly order is one of the better uses of this occasion — a bouquet that turns up on the same week every month for a parent, a grandparent in a care building, or somebody living alone through a Chippewa Valley winter. In a two-shop market the practical advantage is that both benches get to know the address: the driveway, the door that actually opens, the resident's room number, whether the dog is friendly. Set it up as designer's choice so each month reflects what is fresh, and tell us a preferred week rather than an exact date.
