A surprising share of Durham birthday orders are for people who physically cannot accept a bouquet where they spend their day. Duke University and Duke Health together are the county's largest employer, and a nurse on a seven-to-seven shift at Duke University Hospital on Erwin Road cannot have flowers delivered to a patient floor for her own birthday — units take deliveries for patients, not for staff. The same is true one level up the hill in the research buildings, where a badge opens a door that a driver does not have. Research Triangle Park has the same problem in a different shape: the campuses along Cornwallis Road, T.W. Alexander Drive and Davis Drive are gated or desk-controlled, and a driver gets as far as a lobby attendant and no further. So the practical Durham answer, over and over, is the house. Send the birthday bouquet to the address in 27705 or 27707 or 27713 where the recipient will actually be at six in the evening, and put the surprise where they live rather than where their badge works. When the desk *is* the right target — a colleague turning forty on a Friday, a client in a downtown office on Main Street — the studio needs a company name, a floor and a full legal name, because a lobby attendant in RTP will not carry a bouquet up for "Katie in marketing."
The old tobacco warehouses turned office campus, Burt's Bees at the factory, American Underground's startup floors, and the Foster, Corcoran and Main Street buildings — easy on foot, hard to park near on a Durham Bulls home date or a DPAC show night
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina on University Drive, Wolfspeed's Durham operations, and the Duke administrative buildings along Erwin Road and West Main Street — front-desk drops with a department name, best before mid-afternoon
Duke's West and East Campuses, NCCU on Fayetteville Street and Durham Tech on Lawson Street all route to a residence-hall or building front desk under the student's full enrolled name — exam weeks and spring commencement are the year's busiest days
Duke University Hospital on Erwin Road, Duke Regional on North Roxboro and the Durham VA on Fulton Street take deliveries for patients, not for staff on shift, so a Duke Health birthday goes to the 27705 or 27707 address where the recipient lands after a twelve-hour day
Trinity Park and East Campus, Old West Durham and Ninth Street, Watts-Hillandale, Croasdaile, Duke Park, Northgate Park, Braggtown, Hayti and Fayetteville Street, Lakewood, Forest Hills, Hope Valley, Woodcroft, Parkwood and Falconbridge — shaded-spot instructions June through September
