Valentine's week deserves its own paragraph because it behaves like nothing else in the calendar. Every florist in Wake County is capacity-bound in the four days around February 14th; rose cost at wholesale rises for the whole industry, delivery windows widen, and the shops that are honest with you will say plainly that a same-day order placed on the 14th itself gets whatever is left on the bench. If Valentine's Day matters to you, order in the first week of February for a specific date. Ask for the 13th rather than the 14th if the recipient works from home, which in the Triangle is a very live possibility on a Friday — a delivery to an empty house on the 14th is the classic Valentine's failure here. And consider the week after: the flowers are better, the price is normal, the driver is not on his ninth stop, and an arrangement that arrives on the 19th for no reason lands harder than one that arrives on the 14th because the calendar demanded it. The same logic applies to the smaller occasions people forget are competitive — the Friday before prom season at Cary High, Green Hope and Panther Creek, and Mother's Day weekend, which is the busiest florist weekend of the year everywhere.
For context, romance in this town has a geography, and it is not the one outsiders assume. Date nights concentrate on Academy Street and Chatham Street in downtown Cary, where restaurants sit within a few blocks of Downtown Cary Park, the Cary Arts Center and The Cary Theater; on Fenton, which put a walkable restaurant and retail district on the old mall side of town; at Koka Booth Amphitheatre in Regency Park, where the summer concert season and the NC Symphony's outdoor nights are the reliable Cary date; and outward to North Hills and downtown Raleigh, or the American Tobacco Campus in Durham, both inside the 18-mile live radius. The quieter version runs on the greenways — Black Creek and White Oak Creek, the American Tobacco Trail southwest of town, Hemlock Bluffs with its improbable stand of eastern hemlocks off Kildaire Farm Road, Fred G. Bond Metro Park, and Umstead State Park between Cary and the airport. Two other Cary facts shape these orders more than you would expect. RDU is ten minutes from west Cary, so this is a town full of long-distance relationships conducted at gate B; and it is a town almost everyone moved to for work, which means a great many romantic deliveries here are the only physical thing arriving from a person who is eight hundred miles away. The card carries all of it. Use the space.
