Flowers for Boise, ID

Boise wears its geography plainly: a grid of tree-lined streets running up from the Boise River until the pavement gives out at the foothills and the trailheads begin. Deliveries follow that grade. Downtown and the North End — Hyde Park, Harrison Boulevard, the bungalow blocks below Camel's Back — move fast on flat streets, and the Greenbelt condos and Warm Springs Avenue mansions along the water are an easy afternoon. The climb is what slows a driver: houses tucked up Crane Creek, Hulls Gulch, and the Highlands need a landmark in the notes. The steadiest volume, though, is medical and civic — get-well arrangements to St. Luke's downtown and Saint Alphonsus on Curtis, congratulations bouquets to the Capitol and the state offices, and a graduation rush every semester at Boise State along the far bank of the river.
