Alexandria birthdays split into two delivery worlds, and the split matters more here than in most cities because the housing stock is genuinely different block to block. Old Town (22314) is a colonial grid of attached brick rowhouses with no front setback, no driveway and, on the 100 block of Prince Street, original cobblestone. A driver parks at a meter on King, Royal, Pitt, Fairfax or Union and walks the arrangement to a stoop — which is why an entry-door instruction and a phone number matter far more than a gate code. North of Old Town, Carlyle and Eisenhower Valley flip the problem: Hoffman Town Center and the Eisenhower Avenue corridor are secure-lobby buildings where a front desk signs for the bouquet and the recipient is paged. Del Ray (22301) along Mount Vernon Avenue, plus Rosemont, North Ridge and Beverley Hills (22302), are the porch-delivery heart of the city — detached bungalows and four-squares with covered front porches that shelter a vase through an afternoon thunderstorm. Parkfairfax (22302) is a garden-apartment condominium grid where building letters matter more than street numbers. Out west, Seminary Hill, Cameron Station and the Landmark redevelopment area (22304 and 22311) mix mid-century garden apartments with newer towers, and Arlandria and Potomac Yard (22305) run from the Chirilagua blocks up to the Potomac Yard Metro station that opened in 2023. South of the Beltway, Huntington (22303), Kingstowne (22315), Franconia (22310) and the Mount Vernon corridor (22306, 22307, 22308, 22309) — Belle Haven, Fort Hunt, Hollin Hills — are Fairfax County addresses that still read Alexandria, VA on an envelope. Routing between them is its own skill. The east-west arteries are Duke Street, Seminary Road, Braddock Road and Quaker Lane; the north-south spine is Route 1 and Richmond Highway feeding into Washington Street, which through Old Town is the George Washington Memorial Parkway and is federally administered rather than city-run, with rules about where a vehicle may stop. Metro touches the city at seven points — King Street-Old Town, Braddock Road, Eisenhower Avenue, Van Dorn Street, Huntington, Potomac Yard and Franconia-Springfield — and Amtrak and VRE call at Alexandria Union Station on Callahan Drive, opposite the Masonic Memorial hill. Reagan National sits roughly four miles north. The other thing worth knowing about a birthday delivery here is the parade calendar: Old Town closes streets for the George Washington Birthday Parade on the Monday of Presidents Day weekend, billed as the largest in the nation, and again for the Scottish Christmas Walk on the first Saturday of December, while Del Ray shuts Mount Vernon Avenue for Art on the Avenue in early October and for its Halloween parade. On those days an Old Town or Del Ray birthday drop needs to land in the morning or wait until the street reopens.
