Zion was not so much settled as decreed. In 1901 the faith healer John Alexander Dowie founded it as a theocratic utopia on the Lake Michigan shore, laid out its streets in a grid and named them for the books of the Bible — Elijah, Ezekiel, Gideon, Galilee — and that grid still runs the downtown a driver navigates today. The flower orders reflect a working lakeshore town of about twenty-four thousand rather than any old ideal: get-well arrangements for the City of Hope cancer campus on Shiloh Boulevard, birthday and anniversary bouquets for the modest frame houses on the scripture-named blocks, and summer deliveries out to the cottages near Illinois Beach State Park, where the dunes run north toward the Wisconsin line and the retired nuclear plant's silhouette still marks the shore.
