Flowers for Watonga, OK

The gypsum canyon north of town is the reason half of Watonga's summer flower orders exist. Roman Nose State Park — named for the Cheyenne chief who wintered in that canyon into the last century — keeps its lodge and cabins turning over with wedding parties, anniversary getaways, and reunions from April to October, and the flowers ride up the OK-8A spur with everything else: bridal bouquets left at the lodge desk, arch pieces set above the spring-fed pools before a four o'clock ceremony. Down in town the rhythm is steadier. Mercy Hospital receives get-well arrangements on Clarence Nash Boulevard, named for Watonga's own voice of Donald Duck; Eagle prom and graduation weeks bracket May; and every October the Cheese Festival packs Main Street the way it has since 1976, with the T.B. Ferguson Home standing museum-quiet one block off the noise.
