Waldorf spent its first century as a tobacco town — auction barns by the railroad crossing moved much of Southern Maryland's crop, and old-timers still call the 301 junction by its original name, Beantown. The barns are gone; the crossroads kept growing. Today Waldorf is Charles County's commercial engine, a retail corridor stretched along US 301 past St. Charles Towne Center, with the planned villages of St. Charles — Smallwood, Westlake, Fairway — filling the west side and the older 20601 blocks holding the north end where Route 5 peels off toward Leonardtown. Flowers here cover real distance: one afternoon route might touch a Blue Crabs game-day surprise at Regency Furniture Stadium, a Westlake doorstep, and a tribute piece headed south to a La Plata chapel.
