Half of this city's birthday volume is a workplace drop, and Utica's workplaces cluster in four recognizable places. Downtown holds the Oneida County courthouse and county office building, Utica City Hall at Kennedy Plaza, the Genesee Street banks — Bank of Utica and Adirondack Bank are both headquartered on that street — the law and accounting offices between Bagg's Square and Oneida Square, and the Wynn Hospital, which since it opened in 2023 has made the largest single employer in the county a downtown address again. New Hartford and the Commercial Drive corridor hold Utica National Insurance Group at 180 Genesee Street in 13413, the Slocum-Dickson Medical Group offices on Burrstone Road, the Sangertown Square retail and management jobs, and the professional offices strung along Seneca Turnpike. The industrial and tech ring runs from ConMed on French Road to Indium Corporation in Clinton, the Wolfspeed silicon-carbide fab at the Marcy Nanocenter beside SUNY Poly, and out to the Griffiss Business and Technology Park in Rome with the Air Force Research Laboratory's Rome site and Revere Copper nearby. And Turning Stone in Verona is one of the region's biggest employers on its own, roughly 25 miles west.
The other half goes to a house, and Utica housing shapes the handoff more than people expect. East Utica — Bleecker Street, Mohawk Street, the streets off Culver and Kossuth — is largely two-family and three-family stock with a shared front vestibule and an upstairs bell that sometimes works, so a unit number and a phone number matter more than the street number. West Utica and Cornhill are the same pattern at a slightly denser pitch. South Utica, along the upper Genesee and Oneida Street stretches toward the Parkway and Proctor Park, is single-family with a real driveway, the easiest drop in the city. North Utica and Deerfield sit across the Mohawk River off the arterial. Downtown now has genuine apartment occupancy again in the buildings around Bagg's Square and the Brewery District on Varick Street, which means buzzer codes. Outside the line: New Hartford, Whitesboro, Yorkville, New York Mills, Washington Mills, Chadwicks, Sauquoit, Clinton, Clark Mills, Marcy, Oriskany, Barneveld and Holland Patent, all inside comfortable range of both shops.
