Flowers for Tribune, KS

You do not get much farther west in Kansas than Tribune. The Greeley County courthouse sits a bare mile from the Colorado line, the grain elevators mark the town from a dozen miles out across dryland wheat, and the whole county holds fewer people than a single Wichita subdivision. Horace Greeley's name is stamped on the county and his newspaper on the town, a leftover of the 1880s boom that pushed settlement onto this stretch of high plains. Flowers here are a personal business precisely because there are so few of them: an anniversary bouquet is likely headed to someone the florist grew up beside, a get-well basket to a neighbor at Greeley County Health Services on Broadway, senior-night mums to the same gym the sender once played in. Deliveries run the short grid of town and then out the long straight roads — K-27 north and south, K-96 east toward Horace and Leoti — where a good address is a section number and the color of the barn.
